DISPENSING-CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1915.
. Application filed. December 31, 1914. Serial No. 879,840.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, JOSEPH IV. SoHLoss and MEYER W. SOHLOSS, citizens of the United States, residing at New York city, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Dispensing- Containers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to dispensing containers for flat rolls of featherbone, tape and like material, and has for its primary object the provision of a box or package which will completely house the roll and yet permit a length of the material to be drawn from the box or rewound upon the roll with marked ease and facility without removing the roll from the box.
Accordingly, my invention contemplates utilizing a package for the roll, which is closed after the roll has been once inserted therein, and which is provided with a slot through which the end of the roll extends, and in forming in the same or different faces of the box a pair of openings through which a person may insert his fingers to rotate the roll and hence rewind a loose length of material thereon. These finger openings are obviously smaller than the roll, which, therefore, isv completely housed but is readily accessible when it is desired to rewind a loose length of the material upon it.
Another object of the invention is to provide a box or package ofthe character just referred to from a single blank of sheet material, which produces a simple and cheap form of package desirable for use as a container for rolls of material-whose intrinsic value is relatively small. This blank is preferably cut and folded so that it will form a supplemental cover which will close the finger openings in the package. I
lVith these and other objects in view which will be apparent from the detailed description, the invention consists of the combinations and constructions hereinafter to be described and particularly set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows in perspective my improved form of container, the cover being in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the package with the cover in open position; and Fig. 3 isa plan of the blank which is used to construct the preferred embodiment of the container. The container which is to be hereinafter described is particularly suitable for dispensing fiat rolls of tape, braid, featherbone and the like, in fiat form, the one shown being especially designed for dispensing featherbone. This material while elastic, cannot, owing to'its stiffness, be wound upon a reel, since after a length has'b'een cut from the roll the remaining coils expand until the external diameter of the roll is the same as the container, which would cause the in ner coils to leave, or to be so loosely wound upon, a reel as to make the latter valueless. lVhile the package is suitable for rolls of braid or tape made from soft material, yet to be used with the same it would be necessary to wind the same upon a reel and mount the reel within the package, under which circumstances the form of container which is to. be described could be used to advantage.
Referring to the drawings, the box or container has been illustrated as containing a roll of featherbone, a portion of .which shows through theopenings in the top face of the box in Fig. 2, and has been designated 1. The box or package which is designated 2 is, broadly speaking, of the usual shape which is ordinarily used for this purpose, and is of a suitable length, width and depth to receive a roll of featherbone of the desired size. open top, as has heretofore been theinvariable practice, the same is closed by a diaphragm 3 which may or may not be'formed integral with the sides and bottom of the box, and which, together with these parts,
Instead, however, of having an form a closed package which entirely invide access tov the roll,: finger openings are provided which are preferably cut in the diaphragm, one of these openings consisting V Spaced from this central opening 5 is a second finger opening 6 which is preferably arranged adjacent one of the corners of the box, which, together with the opening 5, provides a means of access to the interior of the box through which the thumb and forefinger of a person may be inserted to grasp the roll between them, and rotate the same to rewind upon the roll a surplus length of featherbone which has been withdrawn from the box. 7
It is of course understoodthat the opening 6 is of sufiicient size to permit a relative movement of the finger therein to permit the roll to be turned. Other openings 7 may be provided in the box which are symmetrically arranged with respect to the openings 5 and 6. These openings also may be used as finger openings but will also serve as dis- 7 play openingsthrough which a portion of the roll of featherbone isexposed to view. In order to protect the roll of featherbone from being soiled, a cover 8 is provided for the closed package, which, when in closed position as shown in Fig. 1, effectually prevents the entrance of dust or dirt through This cover may be of any suitable shape and may be integral with the box if so desired, as will be hereinafter referred to.
In order to obtain a box of this construc tion at a greatly reduced cost the form of blank shown in Fig. 3 may be utilized. Here the top' face or diaphragm is designated 3 as before, the side walls 9, 10, 11 and 12 re spectively, the bottom 13, and the cover 8.
Attached to the top face or diaphragm is a flap 1 1, while attached to the side walls 9 and 10 are flaps 15, and laterally projecting from the end walls 11 and 12 are the flaps 16. In order to construct the box from this blank the various side Walls and faces of the flaps are folded along the lines shown, or in other words, the blank is folded over until the flap 14: is adjacent the inner face of the side wall 10 to which it is then secured by paste, or in any other manner. The flaps 15 are then folded inwardly and one of the end walls, as for example 11, with its attached flap 16, is also folded in so as to close one end of the box; the other end wall 152, however, is'not folded into place until a full roll of featherbone has been inserted in the box, when it is then folded into position, and the full roll is inclosed within a closed package having finger openings 5, 6 and 7 in its top face, which are protected bymeans of the cover 8 integral with the remaining portions of the box. The opening' l is also cutin one of the side walls when the blank is stamped out.
A box constructed in this manner may be produced at a greatly reduced cost and need only be made of comparatively light stock, since when the package with the roll inside it has once been assembled, the fact that it forms a closed package will give it the necessary stiffness. Another advantage which may be noted is that the advertising matter may be printed simultaneously and directly on the top face of the diaphragm 3 and the outer face of the cover 8, obviating the necessity for labels which have heretofore been used. Claims.

a cover for the top face of said package covering said finger openings.
' 3. A dispensing container for flat annular coreless rolls of material, comprising'a closed package inclosing the roll having a slot therein through which the loose endof the roll is adapted to pass, and having a centrally disposed opening and an opening spaced therefrom in the top face of the package affording access to the inner and outer peripheries of said roll.
41.
