WILLIAM W YNN REDMAN, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON.
HEAD-COVER FOR POULTRY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed December 22, 1914. Serial N 0. 878,560.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. REDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Head-Covers for Poultry, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to head covers and more particularly to devices of this character adapted to cover poultry heads.
Merchants now, in displaying oultry, wrap the heads of the chickens, tur :eys, or similar fowl with ordinary wrapping paper which in many instances does not cover the entire head and is not only unsanitary but far from cleanly.
It is the object of this invention to provide a simple and eflicient head cover which may be conveniently applied and which may be used to contain suitable advertising indicia and which serves the place of a consignment tag.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view looking from one side. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the article is formed.
In the. specific embodiment of the invention as illustrated herein, the cover is constructed of a single blank having the tapered sides 1 and 2 connected together by a narrow bottom piece 3 defined by the folding lines 4 and 5 and joining the sides integrally, as will be readily understood. When the blank is folded upon the lines 1 and 5 the side members 1 and 2 will be arranged in parallelism and held in such position in a manner to be hereinafter described. The side member 2 has flaps 6 and 7 connected to its marginal edge arranged to be folded at right angles thereto on the lines 8, as shown. These flaps extend throughout the length of the side member 2 and the width of the bottom member 3, but are free of the bottom member and are foldable upon the lines 9 so as to form bottom flaps foldable inwardly over the bottom 3, as will be readily understood. The side member 1 is provided with edge flaps 10 connected to the marginal edges of the side member 1 and foldable on the lines 11 to extend over-the flaps 6 and 7 and these flaps have connected integrally thereto the cover flaps 12 and 13, the latter being provided with slots 14 and the former being provided with looking pins 16 adapted to enter the slots and hold the locking flaps in position over the side member 2. When folded the container or cover forms a substantially frusto-triangular member having an attenuated open end for the neck of the fowl, as will be readily seen from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2. The side 1 has preferably printed thereon lines for the name of the assignee, while the edge flaps and locking flaps preferably have suitable advertising indicia thereon or may be embellished with pictures or in any other suitable manner.
Being constructed in the manner described and shown, the container may readily be shipped in flat form so as to occupy small space and then conveniently folded around and over the head of the fowl and locked in position.
What is claimed is A head cover for poultry comprising a body portion formed with a pair of central fold lines and tapering in opposite directions from such lines to provide side members, flanges formed integral with the side edges of said side members, the flanges of adjacent edges adapted to fold over each other to form end members, and extensions formed on the flanges of one side member and adapted to extend over the opposite side'member and secured to ether.
In testimony whereof I a my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM WYNN REDMAN. Witnesses: v
