WRAPPER.

Be it known that I, HENRY C. KARR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrappers, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

This invention relates to improvements in wrappers for boxes and angular packages; and it consists in certainnovel features hereinafter first! fully described and then particularly claimed.

It is now the common practice in certain mercantile businesses, such especially as the retail jewelry and confectionery trades, to

deliver purchases in pasteboard boxes which are wrapped in paper, the paper being held on the package by rubber bands or by cords. While practice enables the salesmen to wrap these boxes quickly and to make a fairly presentable package, the package does not have an attractive appearance.

It is the object of my invention to provide a wrapper which can be quickly applied to the box or package and which when applied will be neat and attractive. This object I accomplish by the use of the device shown in the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention.

In the drawings to which reference has just been made, Figure l is a perspective view of the wrapper, a box being indicated in dotted lines in position to be wrapped. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the box partly wrapped, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the completelywrapped package.

In carrying out my invention I construct a wrapper A, having a portion B, which for convenience I will designate the base portion and which is of a size and shape corresponding to the size and shape of the box to which the wrapper is to be applied. Extending from the sides of the base portion are wings C D, the wrapper being creased along the lines of connection between the base portion and the wings, so that the Wings will naturally tend to fold upward. Between the base portion and their ends the wings are transner portions F of the wings C are provided with corner-coverin g lips H, the outer or u pper edges I of which are perpendicular to the sides of the wings. the wings C should preferably be equal in length to half the length of the box to be wrapped, so as to meet over the top of the same. The outer portion Jof one of the topcovering wings D is approximately equal in length to the width of the box,while the outer portion of the opposite or fastening wing is somewhat shorter. The edge of this shorter fastening-wing is given an ogee or other fanciful outline, so as to impart an attractive, ornamental, and artistic appearance to the finished package. At the center or other The outer portions G of i point of this fanciful edge or near said edge I provide a fastening K, 4which is preferably in the form of an'integral tongue having adhesive substance onv its inner face and having its outer face given the semblance of an impressed seal. It will be readily understood, however, that this fastening-tongue may be formed separately from the body of the Wrapper and secured thereto, or instead of being coated with an adhesive substance may be provided on its under face with small pins adapted to take into the wing beneath or otherwise fastened.

In applying the Wrapper the box containing the merchandise is placed on the base portion, as indicated in Fig. l. The end wings O are then folded up against the ends of the box and over the top thereof, the corner-covering lips being simultaneously folded against the sides of the box, after which the wings D are successively folded over to cover the top of the box and fastened. The wrapper can be applied to the box and the box delivered almost instantly, the wrapping being performed practically by two motions, as the fingers cause the end wings and the cornercovering lips to assume their proper positions While they are being folded toward the box. Then by holding the end Wings upon the box by the forefingers the thumbs and remaining fingers may be spread to grasp and fold the top-covering and fastening wings. The cor- IOO - tions of the end Wings long enough to meet over the top of the box they will be positively held by the top-covering Wings, and a single fastening at one point on the fasten- 1 o ing-Wing will hold the entire wrapper in place.

The several Wings are not fastened together as in the ordinary paper box, the only fastening employed being that provided on the wing which appears uppermost after the Wrapper has been applied to the box. The outer portions of the end-covering Wings are made long enough to be held against the top of the box by the top-covering Wings and the longer top covering Wing should be long enough to approximately cover the entire top of the box, so that after the wrapper is fastened the end-covering wings cannot easily pull out from thereunder. The fasteningwing is shorter than the Wing directly below, so that its ogee edge and the fanciful fastening will be Well located to impart a neat iinish to the package.

The Wrapper can be applied rapidly and with certainty, and the Wrapped package is free of unsightly iiaps and bulges.

The device is made of stiff colored paper with the fastening in a contrasting, color,

usually, in order to add to the effectiveness of the artistic qualities of the article.

The cost of the device is but little, if any, greater than the ordinary Wrapping-paper,

While it imparts to the Wrapped package an attractive appearance, which cannot be obtained by the use of the ordinary Wrappingpaper.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A wrapper for boxes andlike packages having a base portion of the size and shape of the box to be wrapped, end-covering Wings springing from opposite edges of the said base portion and adapted to be folded over the ends of the box and onto the top thereof, corner-covering lips springing from the sides of the said Wings and adapted to fold against the sides of the box to cover the corners thereof, and top-covering Wings springing from other edges of the base portion and adapted to fold against the sides of the box and over the top edges of the corner-covering lips to hold said lips against the box, one of said Wings being folded down upon` the end-covering wings to hold the same against the top of the box and the other of said wings being somewhat shorter and folded upon the firstmentioned of said Wingsand provided with a fastening device adapted to engage the said first-mentioned top-covering Wing and thereby hold the entire Wrapper around the box, the several Wings and lips being otherwise disconnected.
