FRANKIE L. CARPENTER, OF ORANGE CITY, FLORIDA.
FOLDING BOX;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July so, i915.
Application filed July 25, 1914. Serial No. 853,048.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKIE L. CARPEN- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange City, in the county of Volusia and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes and more particularly to folding boxes adapted for carrying articles shipped by parcel post.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to' provide a box of this character which may be constructed of any suitable material which is cheap and durable, which can be shipped in blank form and readily set up into operative position and in which the parts are so connected that they Will stand all strains brought to bear upon them in shipment of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character havinga transparent pocket forming member in which a letter or any suitable directions for the transportation of the box may be sealed.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof in unfolded position. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. & is a longitudinal section taken approximately on the line 4l-i of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail hori zontal section taken through one of the fastening devices. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the fastening devices before being applied.
teferring more particularly to the drawing the box as illustrated in Fig. 2 is shown to be constructed of a single blank stamped out and folded upon lines to be hereinafter described so that the box may be set up in operative form in a short period of time. As shown in Fig. 2, 1 indicates a bottom which has connected to opposite side edges the side members 2 and 3. The bottom member carries end members 4 each of which is provided with a fastening device 5 adapted to engage in slots 6 formed in the end forming flaps 7 secured to the side members 2 and 3. The opposite edge of the side member 2 is connected to a top 8 which is provided with end forming flaps 9 and a locking flap 10. The end forming flaps 9 carry suitable cord attaching members 11 to which the tying cord 12 is secured. In folding the device to form the box the end members -1- are first folded upon the lines 13 to a position at right angles to the bottom and the side members 2 and 3 are then folded upon the lines ll and 15 to a vertical position. The flaps 7 are then bent over the end members upon the lines 16 and the fastening devices engaged in the slots 6. The top is then folded upon the line 17 and its end forming members folded on the line 18 to lie fiat against the end forming members 7 and to cover the fastening devices 5. The flap 10 is then bent up on the line 19 and inserted on the inside of the side member 3, the package being tied in any suitable manner by the cords or flexible tying elements 12. Secured upon the outside of the side 3 is a transparent pocket forming member 20 having a flap 21 gummed upon its inner side so that the flap can be sealed against the outside of the side member 3. The top is also provided with an address label 22.
The fastening members 5 as shown in Fig. 6 are constructed of substantially crossshaped pieces of material and bent up to form opposite pairs of legs, two of which are passed through the end members 4: and clenched upon the inner side and the other two of which occupy a divergent relation upon the outer side of said flap so as to enter the slots 6 and be clenched upon the outer side of the flaps 7. The cord holding members are formed from single strips of malleable metal passed through the slots in the end forming members 9 and being clenched upon the inner side thereof.
What is claimed is In a box, a bottom member, side members secured thereto, end forming members hinged to the bottom member, end forming members hinged to the side members and adapted to fold over the end forming members on the bottom member, each of the end members of the side members being formed with a slot, a clip secured to each of the end members of said bottom member and provided with a pair of spaced limbs adapted to enter the slots of the end members of said side members so as to be bent back and engage the outer surface thereof, a top member hinged to one of the side members and carrying a locking flap which is adaptedto be inserted Within the boX so as In testimony whereof I afiix my signature to contact With the inner surfaces of one of in presence of two Witnesses.
