BATHING-SUIT POCKET.
Application filed June 4, 1915.
2' '0 all whom it may concern.
Beit knownthat I, SAMUEL PAULL, a citi ten of the United States, and reslding at New York, in the county of New York and State offlew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathing (a n caurt rockets, of WlllCll. the foilowmg 1s a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
tins 1m ention ie a es 0 POCKG s or a 1 ing suits, and the ob ect thereof is to provide a device of thls class which is adapted to be connectedwith a bathlng sult, or a body garment forming part of a bathing suit in such manner that the head portion of the pocket may be outside of the garment and mav be opened for the insertion or removal of various articles into and from the pocket whenever necessary or desirable; a further object being to provide a device of f the class specified which will be waterproof and which may be used in connection with bathing suits of any kind or class; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified and applied and operated as hereinafter described.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by' suitable reference charactersin each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sidelview of my improved bathing suit pocket detached from the garment and independent of the head or jaw members and with parts broken away; Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. 4 but showing the pocket attached to the garment;
Fig. 3 another sectionalview of the top portion of the pocket on an enlarged scale but showing only the pocket proper, the head or jaw members by which the pocket is closed and opened when in use being not shown; Fig. 4 a plan view of the pocket complete and on an enlarged scale and with parts broken away, and showing the head or jaw members in position; and, Fig. 5 a plan view of the pocket complete and showing it open.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I show at a a part of a bathing garment, or the body portion thereof and, in the practice of my invention, I provide a pocket 6, comprising apart 6 of rubber, an

outer casing I) of fabric and a fabric lining 6*. The sides of the outer casing b of fabric are provided with flaps b which are preferably formed integrally with said outer casing, and between the top portion of the outer fabric casing and the rubber pocket member 55 is placed a strip 0 of fiber, or fibrous material and rubber. The fabric lining Z)? does not extend to the top of the pocket or to the top of the rubber part and placed in the top of the pocket and vulcanized to the top of the rubber part Z2 of the pocket and to the top of'the lining b is a thick rubber band (Z, and the parts 0 and b and 7) are stitched together at the top of the pocket as shown at Z) by two lines of stitching extending around said pocket.
This completes the pocket construction independent of the head or jaw members 0 which in this caseare made detachable. The jaw members 6 which form the detachable head of the pocket are composed of two separate parts 6 of the same length and pivoted together at 6 and said jaw memtogether, as shown in Fig. l, the clamp f is swung down into its operative position, as shown in Fig. 2, and securely locks the jaw members e together and the construction of the jaw members and the location of the clamp f is such that when said clamp is swung into its operative position it incloses the hinge connection 6 of the separate parts of the jaws e. The garment'a is provided 'with a slot or opening at a and in connecting my improved pocket with the garment,
the top of the pocket is inserted between the .jaw members 6 which are separated to per mit of this operation, and the clamp f is swung down into operative position and this securely binds the top of the pocket in the head or jaw members, and the body portion of the pocket is passed inwardly through the slot or opening a? and the flaps at the top of the pocket, are stitched, or otherwise secured to the garment above the slotor opening of. IVitli this construction, the pocket is secured in the garment and can only be dee tached by breaking the connection between the flaps If and the garment, but the head of the pocket is outside of the garment and said pocket may be opened by raising the clamp device 7, after which the jaws may be swung outwardly or laterally, as shown in Fig. 5, and any desired article or articles may be placed in, or removed from the pocket or pockets, and the pocket may be closed by pressing the jaw members together and swinging the clamp f into its operative position.
The jaw members 6 when in operative positionas shown in Figs. 2 and 4, compress the thick rubber band d, or the opposite sides thereof together, and the top of the pocket is sealed against the entrance there to of water, and when the pocket is closed the flanges e of one jaw member, or the separate parts thereof, overlap theother aw member, or the separate parts thereof. \Vith this construction the head may be detached from the pocket at any time and may be detached from said pocket in the operation of placing articles in, or remov i-ng articles from the said pocket, and said head may be connected with the pocket whenever desired by simply slipping the open end of the pocket into the head, or between the jaws thereof. Hy'invention, however is not limited to the exact form of the separate jaw members 6, or the separate parts thereof, as herein shown and described, nor to any particular method of hinging o connecting the aw members 6 at the ends thereof and any suitable hinge device maybe substituted for the blocks 6 and other changes in and modifications of the shape or form of the jaw members e and the method of connect ng the same as well as in the construction of the pocket may be made,- within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
I In compliance with rule 43 reference is hereby made to my copending application Serial No. 32378, ,filed June 7 1915.

A )OCkQt of the class described com- I r a posed of inner andouter fabric members between which is part or rubber, said pocket being provided in the topor open end thereof with an annular packing band of rubber and at the sides of the top thereof with depending flaps, and a headinto which the top or open end of the pocket is adapted to be detachably inserted, sjaid head consisting of separate jaws hinged together at their opposite ends, aws being composed of separate parts also hinged together,
