ASBESTOS MAT.
APPLICATION FlL-D`0CT. 3. 19H.

ASBESTOS MAT.
Specication of Letters Patent.
'Patented Feb. 6, 1,1917.
Application led October 3, 1914. Serial No. 864,912.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. VANDER- ronL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county' of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Asbestos Mats, of which the following is a specilication.
The invention relates to mats, and more especially to the class of fire-proof table mats.
An object of the invention is the provision of a mat wherein the hinge connecting the sections of the same can be readily and easily fastened thereto for permitting the free swinging of the said sections for the folding or unfolding of the mat, the hinged connection being possessed of maximum strength, thereby insuring durability and increased life during the use of the mat.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a mat of this character` which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, absolutely fire-proof, and inexpensive in manufacture.`
With these and'other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a mat constructecl in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken plan illustrating the connection of the mat sections more clearly.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the connection between the sections. r
Fig. 4 is a sectional'view showing the mat folded.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the mat comprises a pair of semi-circular shaped sections 19 and 19, which are similarly constructed and made from fire-proof material, preferably asbestos, the shape of the sections being varied ,according to the requirements of use of the mat. It is also to be understood that the said sections 19 and 19 may be made from other materials and the same covered with a fire-proof jacket or covering, or otherwise.
In the drawings it will be noted that the mat sections 19 are swingingly united through the medium of the hinge which comprises the plies or strips 2O made from fabric and joined together through spaced rows of stitching 21 forming a casing 22 therebetween, and in which is received a cord 23 preferably made from asbestos material, the plies of the strips being connected to the sections in a manner as hereinbefore set forth, and the` casing 22 between the seams or stitchings 21 with the cord 23 inthe said casing are disposed between the edges adjacent to each other of the sections 19 so that the joint therebel tween is closed and the said sections may swing in reverse directions to each other for the folding of the mat in either direction, while o n the opening of the mat the joint therebetween will remain closed and rendered heat proof. f
The cord 23 is held against displacement in the casing 22 through the medium of stitching 24 which extends longitudinally thereof at a medial point of the same. These mats are to be made up in all shapes and sizes as required and may be covered with either side up for facing as convenience dictates. v
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation .has been omitted.
What is claimed is A mat of the class described comprising a plurality of; independent sections, flexible strips secured tothe respective surfaces of the sections and of less width than the corresponding dimensions of the sections, said strips intermediate and immediately adjacent the edge of each section being stitched in contact to provide intermediate the sections a small, substantially circular casing, and a {ire-proof filling interposed between the strips intermediate said lines of stitching. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
