A. P. BROWN.
POCKET FOR GARMENTS.
Q No. 416,438. I Patented Dec. 3, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLAN PERCY BROWVN, OF SOHUYLER, NEBRASKA.
POCKET FOR GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,438, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed August 27, 1889 Serial No. 322,105. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN PERCY BROWN, of Schuyler, in the county of Colfax and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pants-Pockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pants-pockets; and it consists in the combination of pockets with straps, which are connected thereto and which have their lower ends fastened in or to the crotch of the pants and extend any suitable distance down the seams inside of the pants-leg, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The objects of my invention are to attach to pants-pockets means by which the wearers attention will be called to any attempt made to pick his pocket, and to line or form the pocket of rubber cloth, so that the hands when covered with perspiration will not catch -in the pocket, as is the case when any material not perspiration-proof is used. 1
The accompanying drawing represents the front of a pair of pants to which my invention is applied, parts being broken away.
A represents a pair of pants of any ordinar'y construction and material, and B the pockets, which may either be of the shape here shown or any' other that may be preferred. These pockets will be preferably made out of or lined with rubber cloth or any other suitable material which is perspiration and moisture proof, so that the pocket will not adhere to the hand when it is covered with perspiration. While rubber may be the most desirable material for this purpose, I do not limit my invention to this material alone, for any other moistureproof material may be substituted therefor.
Fastened along the outer edge of each pocket and extending upward any suitable distance is a strap, string, or strip 0, of any suitable material, and thelower end of this strap, string, or strip extends downward through a small opening D in the lining of the pants, and is fastened securely to the material of the pants, at the crotch or other suitable point. After being fastened to the crotch the lower end of the strip, strap, or cord is made to extend down the inside seam of the leg of the pants upon the opposite side from the pocket. Secured to the inner edge of the pocket is a short strap G, which has its lower end fastened to the longer strip, strap, or cord, as shown, so that the slightest pull exerted upon the inner edge of the pocket will be transferred to the longer strap and through it to the pants, so as to immediately attract the attention of the wearer to the fact that his pocket is being picked. These strips or straps are to be applied to pockets of all forms and made of any material, their obj eot being to notify a person at once that his pocket is being picked, and thus act as a preventive against pickpockets.
I do not limit my invention to any particular form or manner of attaching the straps, for this may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The co1nbination,with a garmentsuch as trousersand a pocket secured at its upper end therein, at or near the upper end of the garment, of suitable straps or strips which are connected to the pocket at their upper ends and to the garment at their lower ends, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a garmentsuch as trousersand a pocket secured thereto, of a long strip or strap which is secured at its upper end to the outer edge of the pocket and at its lower end to the garment, and a short strap or strip which is secured at its upper end to the inner edge of the pocket and at its lower end to the longer strip or strap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALLAN PERCY BROIVN.
Witnesses:
ARTHUR M. PARSONS, CHARLES R FAGG.
