INVENTOR nomasfifam an ATIORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2'7, 1906.
Application filed June 22, 1905. Serial No. 266,500.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS MANAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manhattan borough, in the city and county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fastener or means by which a bag-mouth can be held closed.
The device constitutes a bag-mouth fastener of two bars of any suitable material laid parallel to each other and springs inserted along the line of the bars in such a manner as to close tightly the bars in a vise-like manner. The vise so formed grips and holds tightly the mouth of the bag or anything that it is slid upon and that may be placed or moved within its grip. When the vise gripper is slid along the open mouth of the bag, it closes it and holds it tightly till it is slid or raised off, thus releasing the hold.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a bag-mouth with a closing device embodying this invention. Fig. 2 shows the closing or fastening device separated from the bag. Fig. 3 is a section along a; r, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an end view of a fastener embodying this invention. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of fastener. Fig. 7 is a plan view of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a side view of Fig. 6.
The bag can be made somewhat on the plan of the bag shown in United States Patent No. 498,180, of May 23, 1893.
The bag comprises flap A and B with a mouthclosing flap or extension B A sweller or key 0 is applied under the flap, and said flap is turned down on said sweller and sealed there permanently by any suitable adhesive.
To hold the mouth closed or the flap in closing position, the clamp or grip pieces or bars F, connected by springs or bows P, are
slipped into position as seen in Figs. 1 and 3.
The longitudinal or parallel sticks or pieces F can have the springs eitherall passed and secured through the sticks, as seen in Fig. 4, or, as seen at P, the springs at the ends of the sticks could have their ends driven longitudinally into place.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bag-mouth fastener consisting of bars made separate from the bag and springs for the bars, said springs having their ends passed through and around the bars.
2. A bag-mouth fastener comprising a plurality of bars independent of the body of the bag, and springs extending through the bars and adapted to hold the bars together.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS MANAHAN. Witnesses:
EDWARD WIESNER, GEORGE HULSBERG.
