Description

.R. L. GUGGENHEIMER.
APRON.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 4. 1915.
Patented Oct. 19, 1915.
UNITED STATE S PATENT OFFICE.
REBECCA L. GUGGENHEIMER, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y.
APRON.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, Ransom L. GUGGEN- HEIMER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aprons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in aprons and is particularly adapted for use in bathing and otherwise attending to infants and children.
The object of my invention is to provide an apron having means to protect the clothes of the user from becoming wet when bathing the infant or child, and to enable the latter to be'covered by a portion of the apron to protect it from the air while being dried after being bathed, and for other attentions.
In carrying out my invention I provide an apron having a detachable water-proof protector at the back portion adapted to fit in front of the user and on the lap, a portion of the apron being extended below said protector and adapted to be folded up over the infant or child when upon the lap of the user, with means for detachably fastening such lower portion of the apron to the upper portion thereof to inclose the infant or child therein.
My invention further comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Jae
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved apron in use; Fig. 2 is a' front view of the apron; Fig. 3 is a rear view of a portion thereof; Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a portion of the inner side of the apron; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of a por tion of the inner face of the detachable pro tector.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
At 1 is indicated an apron which may be of any suitable material, and which is shown provided with a bib portion 2. At 3 is a band or tape attached to the apron and 2 adapted to be fastened around the waist of the wearer in an ordinary manner. At 4 is a protector detachably secured upon the inner face of the apron, and preferably made of waterproof material, such as rubberized Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct, 19, 1915, Application filed May 4, 1915. Serial a... 25,667.
cloth, to prevent water leaking through the apron upon the clothes of the wearer. The protector 4 is shown having an upper bib portion 4' located behind the bib portion 2 of the apron. The lower portion of the protector extends sufliciently far down to end substantially near the knees of the wearer. The protector 4c is shown plaited at 5 at the waist portion, there being two such plaits shownsecured by stitches, whereby the upper portionof the protector may be narrowed where it fits around the waist, and the lower portion may spread out in an open manner to provide the desired width over the lap. Protector 4 is detachably secured upon the inner face of the apron and the bib, for which purpose complemental fastening devices 6, 7, are shown applied upon the protector and the apron at their waist or band portions, and complemental fastening devices 8, 9 are shown provided upon the upper bib portion 4 of the protector and the upper bib portion 2 of the apron for attaching said parts together, thereby to keep the protector in proper position behind the apron and its-bib portion 2. The apron is made of a length considerably more than that of protector 4, as indicated at the part 1 to normally hang below the protector, so that when an infant or child is placed upon the apron on thewearers lap, the infant or child will rest over the protector 4, and then the lower extended portion 1 of the apron may be folded up over the infant or child to protect the latter, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1. Complemental fastening devices 10, 11 are provided on the outer face of the apron, the
members 10 being located at the lower end of the extended part 1 of the apron and the members 11 located at the upper or waist line portion of the apron, whereby the lower portion of the'apron may be attached to the upper portion of the apron when folded over the infant or child.
To retain the bib in proper position in front of the wearer I have shown the band ortape 3 as provided with straps or tapes 12 adapted to. pass over the shoulders of the wearer, and at 13, 14 are complemental fastening devices respectively upon the end portions of the, tapes or straps 12 and the upper portion of the bib part 2, whereby the tapes or straps 12 may be passed over the shoulders and conveniently attached to the bib portion 2 to retain the latter in place,
which in turn will retain the upper or bib portion 4 of the protector 4 in place in front of the wearer. The complemental fastening devices I have referred to may comprise ordinary glove fasteners or other devices suitable for the purpose.
In using my improved apron the same is fitted upon the person in the manner described, with the extended portion 1 hanging downwardly. When it is desired to bathe or attend to an infant or child the same is placed upon the lap of the wearer over the protector 4 and the apron 1, and then the lower portion .1 of the apron is drawn up over the child and fastened to the main waist portion of the apron by the fasteners 10, 11, with the result that the child may be quickly protected from the atmosphere while it is being dried or otherwise attended to. By making the apron of suitable material it may serve in the nature of a towel as a means for drying the child.
My improved apron will be found of advantage for the purpose set forth, and it will be apparent that the protector 4: may be readily removed from the apron when the latter is to be washed.
Having now described my invention what I claim is 1. The combination of an apron having a bib portion, with a protector located along the face of the apron, said apron being of greater length than the protector adapted to be folded upwardly in front of the latter, means to detachably connect the lower portion of the apron with a portion of the apron near the Waist line, and means to detachably connect the protector with the apron adjacent its waist line and with the upper part of the bib portion of the apron.
2. The combination of an apron having a bib portion, with a protector located along a face of the apron, said apron being of greater length than the protector adapted tobe folded upwardly in front of the latter,
,means to detachably connect the lower portion of the apron with a portion of the apron near the waist line, and means to detachably connect the protector with the apron adjacent its waist line and with the upper part of the bib portion of the apron, said protector being plaited and narrow at the waist portion and extended wider at the lower portion.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 30th day of April, A. D. 1915.
REBECCA L. GUGGENHEIMER.
