To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. SrMrsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Capes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to capes, and more particularly to a storm cape designed for use by out of door workmen to protect their shoulders and backs from rain or snow.

It is the primary aim of the invention to so construct the cape that the wearers arms will be left entirely free, although his sl1oulders and back will be completely covered by the cape and protected from the elements.

Another aim of the invention is toprovide a storm cape of the type mentioned so will not be liable to in any way restrict chest movement, the holding means being arranged to yield to the movements of the body.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cape embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical front to rear section taken in a plane through one shoulder of the cape.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.

As will be apparent from an inspection of the drawing, the body of the garment is formed or cut from a single sheet of material and includes a front 1, shoulders 2, and

a back 3, the front being divided as at 4, and the sheet of material comprising the body of the cape being cut away as at 5 be tween the shoulders 2 to form the neck opening of the cape. It will thus be seen that the front 1 consists of two sections which are continuous with the shoulders 52 and means may be provided for connecting the adjacent edges of these sections of the front, such for example as the button 6 and buttonhole 7.

the shoulders of the wearer and are not so wide as to extend over the arms, and it will also be apparent that the outer lateral edges of the front sections of the cape are continuous with the corresponding edges of the shoulder portions as are also the lateral edges of the back portion 3.

The body portion of the cape is preferably formed from any ordinary water proof fabric such for example as that employed in the manufacture of the ordinary rain-coat and it'is preferable that it be of a single thickness except at the shoulders and upper por tion of the back. In order that the shoulders and upper portion of the back of the wearer may be better protected the body portion of the cape at these portions is of double thickness, the extra thickness being indicated by the numeral 8 and being in the nature of a piece of the same material as that comprising the body portion and stitched at its lateral edges as at 9 to the outer lateral edges of the front shoulder and back sections of the cape-body. If desired, the forward and rear edges of the thickness 8 may be left unattached to the body of the cape. The thickness 8 is also stitched at the neck opening of the cape and these stitches serve to attach to the capebody, at the neck opening, a collar which is indicated at 10 and which is preferably of the same material as that previously referred to and which may be overturned, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or may be turned up to protect the neck of the wearer.

In order that the front and upper portion of the back of the cape may be held in proper position, upon the wearer, a strap is provided at each side of the cape and connects these said portions. Each of the straps above referred to, includes a nonelastic strip 11 attached to the respective front section 1, a non-elastic strip 12 attached at a corresponding point to the corresponding side of the back 8, and an elastic strip 13 which connects the ends of the first mentioned straps. It will be understood, of course, that the straps above referred to pass beneath the arm pits of the wearer, and consequently, while they hold the front and back portions of the cape against the body of the wearer, do not restrict the arm and chest movements.

As a means for holding the lower portion of the back of the cape in pro-per position upon the wearers back, a belt 14 is provided and consists of sections which are attached at opposite sides of the back 3 and are connected by means of a buckle 15.

From the foregoing description of the invention it will be seen that there is provided a cape especially adapted to be worn by out-of-door workmen, messengers, deliverymen, street-car conductors, etc, and which will effectually protect the wearers shoulders from the elements.- It will also be seen that the cape will in no way interfere with the free use of the wearers arms.

said body including a front, shoulders, and a back, the front being relatively shorter than the back and being equal in width therewith, said shoulders being wider than the front and back and having a neck openin'g formed between them, a yieldable connection engaging the side edges of the garment body upon each side thereof and per manently connecting the front and back below the shoulders, said connections normally acting to yieldably hold the front and back against the body of the wearer, and a belt extending in front of the back at the lower end thereof and from side to side of the said back.-
