a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfax, in the county of Osage and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retainers for Ironing-Board Covers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates broadly to ironing boards and more specifically to an improved clamp for preventing the accidental displacement of the cover on the ironing board, having for its primary object to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character which may be readily engaged with the cover of the ironing board for preventing the displacement of the latter during the ironing operation.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will occupy a minimunr amount of space and may be readily engaged with and disen-J gaged from the ironing board, being so constructed as to allow the same to be engaged with the bottom of the ironing board so as to in no way interfere with the operator or person using the ironing board.

Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of an ironing board cover used in the present invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of an ironing board showing my improved cover in place thereon, the latter being held in place by the improved clamp means used in the present invention; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the clamp elements used in the present invention.

In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention an ironing board 5 is provided which has arranged in uniformly spaced apart relation on the bottom thereon a plurality of clamp elements 6 each of which in the present instance comprises a metallic bar the opposite ends 7 of which preferably taper, and are provided adjacent the terminal ends thereof with apertures 8, said apertures adapted for engagement with screws 9 or other detachable fastening means by which said clamp elements are engaged with the bottom face of the ironing board 5. Each of the elements 6 is provided with a longitudinally extending groove in the-upper face thereof 1n wh1ch is seated a finger 10, said finger being provided with an aperture midway the ends thereof in which is engaged a detachable securing means 11 which in the present instance comprises an ordinary screw, the latter being in threaded engagement with the clamp element 6 as advantageously illustrated in Fig. 3. The opposite ends 12 of each of the fingers 10 are slightly curved upwardly at a substantially obtuse angle to the body portion thereof so as to facilitate the engaging of the ironing board cover therebeneath, each of said fingers 10 inclined slightly toward the opposite ends thereof so as to conform to the configuration of the clamp elements 6, thereby snugly engaging in the longitudinal groove.

The ironing board cover in thepresent instance comprises an ordinary sheet 13 which is made of any suitable flexible material and is provided on the opposite longitudinal edges thereof with securing tabs 1% which are secured to the cover 13 in any suitable manner, while one end of said cover 13 is provided with tabs 15 which are identical with the tabs 14 but extend longitudinally 0f the cover 13 instead of transversely thereof as is the case with the tabs 14, said tabs 15 being secured to a clamp element 16 the latter being identical with the clamp element 6 but being arranged transversely of the board 5 instead of longitudinally thereof as is the case with the elements 6 thereby facilitating retention of the cover 13 on said board 5 and preventing the longitudinal movement of the cover on the board while the clamp elements 6 prevent the lateral movement of said cover on said board as is obvious.

In operation the cover 13 is arranged over the upper face of the ironing board 5 and the tabs 1'1 engaged beneath the opposite ends 12 of the fingers 10 as advantageously illustrated in Fig. 2, said tabs being positively retained beneath said fingers not only by the inherent resiliency of the fingers but likewise in view of the grooves in which they are engaged, so as to prevent the lat eral displacement of the tabs but at the same time allowing the same to be readily disengaged from the fingers at the will of the operator by exerting pressure thereon longitudinally of the board 5. Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with an ironing board, acover for said board having a plurality of transversely and longitudinally eX-- tending tabs associated therewith, of clamp elements arranged longitudinally of said board for engagement wlth the transverse tabs, and a transversely arranged clamp element for engagement with the longitudinally extending tabs for preventing the accidental displacement of said cover from said board.

2. The v combination with an ironing board, a cover for said board having tabs extending from its margins, of plates associated with said board, and resilient fingers detachably carried by the plates for yieldingly holding said tabs on the latter to retain said cover from casual displacement.

3. The combination with an ironing board, a cover for said board having a plurality of tabs associated therewith, means for retaining said cover on said board, said means comprising a plurality of plates each of which is detachably engaged to said board and provided with longitudinally extending grooves therein and a finger detachably mounted in each of said grooves for yieldably holding said tabs in engagement with said plates, for preventing acci dental displacement of said cover.
