IRONING-BOARD.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Man 23, 1915,.
Application filed May 8, 191%. Serial No. 837,104.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, FRANCIS T. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ironing boards and is illustrated in one form in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation Fig. 2 is a back plan view; Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. a is a similar section on an enlarged scale.
Like parts are indicated by like letters throughout the several figures.
A is a conventional form of ironing board larger at one end than at the other and rounded at one end.
A A are supporting legs therefor braced by the braces A B, B are supporting clamps attached at their central portions tolthe ironing board as indicated and projecting toward the outer edges of the board. The spring clamps which, as at B are centrally engaged with the bottom side of the board, have at either end portions B inclined to the body of the spring clamp 18, but arranged for substantial parallelism with the bottom of the board when in operating position.
B B are clamping blocks or bars adapted to engage the bottom of the board A and to be held in position by the springs B resting upon the flat surfaces B The clamping bar B is provided with curved extension B adapted to underlie the smaller end of the board and be concentric with the curved part thereof.
18 is a spring extension projecting across the rear end of the board and attached to and carried by the clamping bar B '0 is a cover cloth adapted to overlie the board and extend around and under it and to be held in position as indicated in Figs. 1 and 41- bv the clamping bars B B and extensions B, B
llt will be evident that while T have shown in my drawings an operative device, still many changes might be made both in size, shape and arrangement of parts without departing materially from the spirit of my invention, and I wish, therefore, that my drawings be regarded as in a sense diagrammatic.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows: The cover cloth or sheet is spread over the board in the usual manner, being allowed to hang down around it on all sides. The clamping bar which has the curved extension is then brought down to engage a portion of the sheet and is brought up against the under side of the board and moved inwardly and rearwardly until it is engaged by the clamps, the sheet being thus held frictionally between the bar or spring extension and the board. The other clamping bar is then brought into position in the same manner until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 2. By this means the sheet is held tight to the board at all points without mutilation of the sheet and it may be easily detached at will by merely withdrawing the clamp bars from beneath the clamping springs.
I claim:
1. The combination of an ironing board and cover therefor of frictional means for yieldingly holding the cover in fixed position upon the board, said means being ap plied to said cover and board beneath the board and immediately inside the edge thereof, said means being substantially continuous about the periphery of the board and comprising a plurality of separate clamping bars and yielding means for compressing said bars against the board.
2. The combination of an ironing board and cover therefor of frictional means for yieldingly holding the cover in fixed position upon the board, said means being applied to said cover and board beneath the board and immediately inside the edge thereof, said means being substantially continuous about the periphery of the board and comprising a plurality of separate clamping bars and yielding means for compressing said bars against the board, said yielding means taking the form of spring clamps attached to the board which underlie the clamping boards.
8. The combination of an ironing board and cover therefor of movable means for yieldingly holding the cover in fixed position upon the board, said means being applied to said cover and board beneath the board and immediately inside the edge thereone of said extensions being curved to COllG- 10 of, said means being substantially continuspond with the end of the board.
0115 about the periphery of the board and In testimony whereof I afiix my signacomprising a plurality of separate clamping ture in the presence of two witnesses this bars and yielding means for compressing 5th day of May 1914.
said bars against the board, said-clamping I FRANCIS T. JOHNSON. bars having yielding extensions each at one Witnesses:
end extending across the end of the board BESSIE S. RICE,
when the clamping members are in position, MINNIE SUNDFAR.
