T 0 all whom t may concern.'
3e it known that l, VILLIAM T. LUCKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Pressers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trousers pressers and has for its primary object to provide a presser of this character in which the trousers may be held therein so as to sust-ain the fabric smooth and to produce creases throughout the crease lines of the leg portions thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a trousers presser wherein the trousers at both ends thereof will be readily and easily clamped so as to prevent puckering while held within the presser, thus assuring uniform crease lines in the fabric and also which will sustain said fabric smooth whereby the trousers will be neatly pressed and creased.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a trousers presser in which a pair of clamping sections are hinged together so that the same may be opened and closed and serve as leaves between which the trousers may be placed so that the same can be readily smoothed on the closing of the seetions, the trousers being held smooth through the medium of presser boards for the uniform pressing thereof and also the simultaneous creasing so that on the removal thereof, they will be smoothly creased for further use.
A still further object of this invent-ion is the provision of a trousers presser in which the hinged sections thereof will be firmly clamped so as toprevent the accidental opening of the sections when trousers are placed therein for the pressing and creasing thereof.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a trousers presser which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable, and eiiicient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture. y
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a trousers presser wherein the trousers may be neat-ly pressed without the necessity of the ironing of the same in the ordinary well known manner.
lith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illus- Specification of Letters Patent.

trated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a plan view of the trousers rpresser constructed in accordance with the invention, the sections thereof being shown open and a pair of trousers clamped thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the removable presser board in position on one section and one vleg of the trousers folded. Fig 3 is a side edge elevation of the trousers presser when closed and clamping the trousers therein for the pressing and creasing of the saine. Fig. l is an end elevation thereof when closed. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of one of the presser boards. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through one section of the presser showing in detail one of the clamps detachably mounted therein. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through one of the presser boards. Fig. 8 is a similar view showing a slight modification thereof. Fig. 9 is a fragmental vertical transverse sectional view through the presser showing one of the latches.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout t-he several views lin the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the trousers presser comprises a pair of similarly shaped board- like sections 10 and 11, respectively, the same being swingingly connected at adjacent edges by means of hinges 12 so that the sections may be swung to open or closed position with respect to each other. Each of said sections 10 and 11 is provided with .a suitable cloth covering 13, and adapted to be laid longitudinally upon the inner covered faces of the said sections is a pair of trousers A to be pressed and creased, the sections being open and disposed in the same plane with each other to allow the said trousers to be superimposed thereon in a manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Detachably mounted upon the outer end edge of the section 11 is a pair of spaced clamping` members each comprisinga base 1A formed at its outer end with a hook 15 which detachably engages the outer free edge of the said section 11, while the inner end of the said base forms a stationary jaw 16, and pivotally connected to this base is a movable clamping jaw 17 which coperates with the stationary jaw 16 for clamping therebetween the waist band 18 0f the trousers A, the movable jaw 17 being formed with the linger engaging extension 19 whereby it may be manipulated for releasing the waist band 18 of the trousers when it is desired to remove the same from the presser. lt will be apparent that when the waist band 1S of the trousers it is engaged` in the clamps, the said trousers will be fastened at the waist line thereof to the section lil, whereby the leg portions of the trousers can be smoothed prior to the closing of the sections of the presser.
Adapted to be removably inser'ed between the leg portions Q0 and 2l, respectively, of the trousers7 resting upon the section ll is a smoothing board comprising outer plies 22 and an intermediate corrugated ply 23, the same being united in any suitable manner. rlihe smoothing board is provided with a suitable cloth covering 24 and is of a shape corresponding to the shape of the section ll but is cut into one edge to form an inwardly tapering notch to accommodate the crotch of the trousers A so that the inner portions of the legs 20 and 2l will lie smooth and the said smoothingl board will sustain the same in such condition while the trousers are being pressed.
Removably superimposed upon the trousers A and extending throughout a portion thereof resting upon the section ll is a Second smoothing board 26, the same being constructed correspondingly to the smoothing board hereinbefore described with the exception of the recesses and this board 26 has ixed to one side near the longitudinal edges thereof the ends of a flexible cord 2T, the saine being trained through eyes 28 fixed in the said board and has loosely engaged thereon a plurality of clips 29 which areA adapted to detaehably engage the cuit 30 at the lower end of the leg 2() so as to hold the latter smooth and prevent bulging or puckering thereof, t-he leg portion 2O being folded on to the smoothing board. 2G, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings7 and is smoothed with the hand so as to remove any roughness or creases therein prior to engaging the clips 29 therewith. Superimposed upon the folded leg portion 2O is a third removable creasing board 3l which is of identical construction and shape with respect to the smoothing' board 2t) hereinbefore mentioned and thereafter the leg portion 2l is folded over on to the said smoothing board 3l, after which the said leg portion is smoothed with the hand so that on swinging the section l() upwardly and inwardly toward the section 1l, the trousers will be clamped between said sections for the pressing and creasing thereof, the board 3l being provided on one side with a flexible cord 32 and clips 33, respectively, which are mounted in an identical manner as are the cord and clips 2l' and 29, hereinbefore described so that the clips 33 will engage the cuil:1 portion 3() of the leg 2l. therebyY sustaining the same smooth to prevent and avoid wrinkling thereof when in the presser.
.,`he section ll has suitably pivoted therelo at the longitudinal side and the outer edge, a 'plurality of catches or latches Sil, each being provided with a series of openings 235 for tl e engagement therein of keeper lugs Sie lined in the side and outer end edges of the section l0, it being` understood ot course that on each longitudinal side edge of the section 1l is mounted a single catch, although any number may be used thereon if drsireth while at the outer free edge of the said section ll is mounted a pair of catches so as to engage with the keeper lugs Bti for the fastening of the sections l0 and lt closed and in clamping relation to each other, it being seen that any one of the catches S-l- 1an be suuing outwardly and dovmwardly away from the lng Btl so as to permit the convenient opening of the presser or the raising of the section 2l thereof. Surrounding the pivoted end of each catch 34|: is a housing 237, the same being suitably lined with the section 1l and has arranged therein a spring 38 which acts upon the pivoted end of the catch 34- to sustain the same in engaging or disengaging position.
rlhe section l() may fasten closer or farther away from the section ll by adjustably engaging the lugs 3G in the openings Z55 in the catches 3st so that the trousers clamped between the sections will be smoothly pressed and creased without necessitating the ironing thereof. rlthe free ends of the catches -l are slightly outwardly curled, as shown at 39, so as to permit the lugs 3G to pass the saine for positive engagement in the openings 35 therein for the locking of the sections 10 and ll. in closed wition for the clamping, pressing5 and n. ing of the trousers after the latter have been placed therein in the manner as hereinbefore described.
It is7 of course, understood that in lieu of the clips, catches, and other adjunct parts of the presser, any suitable devices may be employed without. departing from the spirit of the invention and such as come properly within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
ln Fig. S, there is shown a slight modification of smoothing board wherein between the outer plies itl is disposed cork ll so as to ve vl he requisite resiliency to the board. llowever1 in lieu of the cork Lll, another suitable resilient material may be interposed between the outer plies of the board if desired.
fit will be noted that the leg portions 2O and 2l. of the trousers A when mounted within the presser will be held so as to avoid any possibility of irregular creasing thereof and the said leg portions will be sustained taut upon the smoothing board to sustain the same smooth and avoid wrinlling thereof. The presser can be made of a size to fit within a dress suit case or other traveling bag. Vhen the trousers have been clamped between the sections 10 and ll of the presser, there will be no friction or wear upon the trousers so as to wear smooth the fabric thereof which would necessarily cause the same to appear shiny. rIhe trousers when removed from the presser will be neatly creased and the fabric thereof smooth.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the presser will be clearly understood and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Vhat is claimed is A trousers presser comprising swingingly connected board-like sections, detachable clamping members mounted upon one of the sections and adapted to engage the waist band of the trousers, removable smoothing' boards adapted to be interposed between the folded portions of said trousers and also between the swinging sections, means carried by one of the sections and engageable with the other for locking the said sections in clamping relation to each other, and resiliently held clips carried by a pair of the smoothing boards for engaging the free ends of the said trousers to sustain the same tautI and in smooth condition upon the boards. Y
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
