Description

APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 14. I916.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEY DELLA WOOLARD, OF ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA.
MEANS FOR SECURING COVERS ON IRONING-BOARDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filedseptember 14, 1916. Serial No. 120,134.
To. all whom it may concern Be it known that DELLA WOOLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing atrOntario, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Covers on Ironing- Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for securing a cover on an ironing board, and more particularly to a securing device having a plurality of cover engaging members and means for forcing the said members toward each other.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated of very simple construction which may be produced at relatively small cost. A further object is to produce a fastening device composed, broadly stated, of a plurality of cover engaging hooks and resilient means for constantly forcing the hooks toward each other. Other objects will appear from the detail description.
vFigure 1 is a. fragmentary underneath view of the foot or large end of an ironingboard with the invention applied,
Fig. 2 is the same of an intermediate section of the board.
A cover 2 which may be of fabric or any other suitable material is placed about the ironing-board 1 in the usual manner. This cover is lapped underneath theboard, at the side edges thereof, as at 2.
For securing the lateral portions of the cover, the device shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings is used. This-securing device comprises two hooks 3 and 4 and a tension coil spring 5 secured thereto. The hooks are formed by bending a piece of wire to provide two diverging hook arms v6 and an eye 7 at the apex of the hook. The points 8 of the arms 6 are bent at acute angles to the arms so as to engage the cover 2, as shown.
The coil spring 5 is provided at each end with a loop 9 which is secured through the, eye 7 of the hook, This spring is of such length that, when the hooks are secured in proper position in the side portions of the 'cover 2, it will be under tension. By this means the spring acts to constantly draw the two hook members toward each other, thus subjecting the cover to tension and holding the same securely on the board. At the foot or the broad end of the board 1 the cover, in
addition to having the lateral portions 2, is also bent under the end of the board to provide the end portion 2*. To secure this end portion I provide an additional hook so that the fastening device is composed of three arms disposed approximately in the form of an isosceles triangle. The lateral hook members 3 and 4? are similar to the hook members 3 and 4 of Fig. 2, and are constantly pulled toward each other by the action of the tension spring 5. A similar hook member 10 engages the end portion 2 of the cover and'is secured to the outer end of. a tension spring 11 similar to spring 5, the inner end of which is provided with an eye 12 which is secured through one of the coils 5 of spring 5 at the longitudinal center thereof. The two springs 5 and 11 00-.- operate to force the hook members 3, 4, and 10, toward each other, thus firmly securing the cover about the foot or broad end of the board, the cover being subjected to constant tension both longitudinally and transversely of the board, the line of tension of spring 11 being at right angles to the line of tension of spring 5.
In applying my invention any suitable number of devices, such as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, may be used to secure the intermediate portion of the cover about the board, and a device such as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings will be utilized at each end I of the board for securing the end portions of the cover.
By using this fastener the cover may be quickly and easily applied to or removed from an ironing board and all necessity for tacking or sewing the cover on is eliminated.
There may be slight changes made in the construction. and arrangement of the different parts of my invention without departin from the field and scope of the same, and
I intend to include all such variations in this application in which the preferred form only of my invention is disclosed.
I claim: Q In fastening means for an ironing board cover, the combination with a coil tension.
spring, hook members secured to the springs at each end thereof and adapted to engage intothe fabric of arrfironing board cover, a second spring providedat its. inner end with an integral eye secured about one of the A neeeeee coils of the first mentioned spring at the are secured to tension along lines extending longitudinal center thereof, and a hook cerin planes at right angles to each other, 10 ried by said second spring at the outer end In testimony whereof I afiix my signature thereof and adapted to engage into the fabric in presence of two Wi nesses.
5 of an ironing" board cover, said second spring DELLA WOOLARD.
being disposed substantially at right angles Witnesses: to the first mentioned spring whereby the ELLA M, BROW springs act to subject a cover to which they M. A Ceornze
