Specification of Let-ters Patent.
STATES PATENT onirica,
Patented Sept. 15p, 1908.
ieo'z. seran No. 389,687.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Neun: K. SMALL, a residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of (Jalifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llooks and Eyes; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ol' the inven tien, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has reference to hooks and eyes, and it aims to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensively con--I structed fastening device of that nature which may be attached t-o a garment without the necessity of sewing.
To this end each member of the fastener consists of a pair of wires, one of which serves as the fastener )roper and the other as a support therefor, t ie o erative wire or fastener propel' being secured) intermediate its ends to the bight portion of the corresponding U- shzped support. Y
he invention will be readily understood description and its preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like arts are designated by corresponding re erence numerals throughout the Of the said drawings, Figure 1 is a crspective view of the hook member of the astener, Fig. 2 is asimilar view of the eye member, and, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the fastener in place upon the meeting edges of the fabric.
teferring more particularly to the drawings, 5 designates the hook member and 6 the eye member of the fastener, each member being formed of two strips of steel wire one of which, in each instance, is in the form of a U shaped support 7 the free ends of the legs S of which are pointed as shown.
The wire which forms the operative portion, or' hook )roper of the member 5 is bent first upon it-se f to provide a narrow or elongated oop 9, whose arms diverge towards the adjacent ends of the bight portion 10 of the corresponding su )port '7 around which they are coiled, as in ieatedby the numeral and are then directed rearwardly and twiste other, diverging again thereafter, the ends of .said arms are then bent i downwardly so as to lie directly inthe rear of extremities of said and parallel with the legs of the support, the arms being likewise iointcd. The loop 9 is finally bent upon lt'self and its free end directed rearwardly across the bight portion 10, the two ,portions of the loop being disposed in spaced"1'clation.
The wire of which the eye proper is constructed, has its central portion bent to form a forwardly-extendino semi-circular loop 13 which rests upon the zbight portion 14 of the corresponding support 7, at opposite ends thereof, the sides of the loop being likewise coiled around the bight portion of said support at suc-h points as at 16, and then directedV rearwardly and twisted together, as shown, the ends 17 of said sides ybeing bent downwardly similarly to the bent ends of the arms of the hook loop 9. The extremities of sai downbent portion or spurs 17, are likewise sharpened. ln attaching t-he fastener, sharpened ends or prongs of are orced through the fabric,
each member and are then Fig. 3. The bightvportion of each support' is referably flattened.A
1. A member of a consisting ot a pair of intertwisted wires, one of which is bent to form a U-shaped support having the terminals of its legs sharpened, the other wire being bent to form a loop having its arms coiled around the bight portion of said support and directed rearwardly thereof, and intertwisted, the free ends of said arms being bent downwardly parallel with the legs of said supporting member, and having sharpened terminals.
2. An eye comprising a vertical U-sha )ed support formed of a strip of wire, am a second strip of wire bent to form a central semi-circular loo) resting at opposite ends upon the upper ace of the bight portion of said support, the arms of said loop being coiled around the corresponding ends of said bight portion and directed rearwardly thereof and twisted together, the free ends of said arms being bent downwardly parallel with the legs of said support.
ln testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in preseneeof two witnesses.`
