Application filed December 22, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, AMos A. BURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Flatiron Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ironing board attachments, and more particularly to flat iron holders.
t is an object of the present invention to provide an extremely simple, practicable and substantial inexpensive form Iof device for conveniently holding a flat iron while in heated condition and in use on an ordinary or any suitable form of ironing board.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a flat iron holder that may be conveniently applied to ironing boards of various width and which will remain in stable position so long as required.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective of an ironing board to which the improved holder has been applied,
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of a fragment of an ironing board showing the holder in section,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan of the holder, and
Figure 4 is a rear end or edge view of the holder.
The present invention consists of a device preferably formed of sheet metal of inexpensive construction, and has a generally 'fiat bottom 2 with a front edge 3 which may be slightly beveled oif'so as to facilitate the running of the iron on to the bottom of the holder when the same is applied to an ironing board I, as shown in Figure l. The parallel side edges of the iron holder may have upturned parallel flanges 1-, and the rear transverse edge may have an upturned flange 5 to limit the movement of the flat iron F as it is run on to the holder.
To elevate the bottom 2 of the device so as to provide for the circulation of air and thus prevent the scorching of the fabric covering the ironing board, means are provided for tilting the bottom 2 upwardly slightly, and such means are here shown as ADJUSTABLE FLATIRON HOLDER.
Serial No. 608,477.
including a pair of downwardly struck legs 6 adjacent the rear end of the bottom. 'Fo protect the fabric under the front end of the holder, the latter is designed to press snugly down into the fabric covering the ironing board. rhe front lower portion of the bottom 2 is provided with a lining 7 of asbestos or other suitable material.
A further feature of the invention consists of means for firmly holding the holder 2 when it is applied to the ironing board l, and further enables the ready application of the holder to ironing boards of different width and of different thickness. Such attaching and holding means includes a pair of substantially parallel transversely eX- tending shafts 10 disposed under the bottom y or plate 2 and being shiftably guided by suitable means. These means may consist of downwardly struck tongues or lugs 1l, bent over to form hooks passing under the respective shafts 10. Between each pair of hooks 11 for each shaft, there is disposed a straight retaining lug 12 engaging the contiguous portion of its respective shaft 10 and thus holding this against lateral displacement from its guide hooks l1. The inner ends of the shafts are provided with angularly bent portions 10a to prevent the entire withdrawal by end-wise movement of the shafts from their guides. The outer ends of the shafts are each provided with a loop or coil 10b forming springs lying in planes at right angles to the axes of the shafts 10. Extending tangentially from the spring loops 10b are fingers l()c having upturned ends 10d. The inturned ends 10a of the shafts are adapted to be pulled away from the sides of the holder sufficiently to be passed down over the side edges of the ironing board l, and then the shafts are pushed inwardly to bring the side fingers 10 in against the side edges and thus positioning the retaining ends 10b in under the bottom of the ironing board. The ends l()a of the shafts operate to press against the bottom surface of the bottom or plate 2 of the holder when the retaining fingers 10c are sprung or bent downwardly to bring the hook ends 10a under the ironing board. The resiliency of the spring loops l()b thus becomes operative to retract the holding fingers 10, and the holder is therefore firmly held in applied position on top of the ironing board.
From the above, it will be seen that I have provided an. extremely simple and inexpensive form of adjustable, flat iron holder adapted to be quickly and easilyv mounted upon an ironing board and to be held in attached position to conveniently receive an iron While the same is at rest or out of use. n
Further embodiments, variations and riodilieations maj,7 be resorted to Within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
lVhat is claimed is l. A flat iron holder eon'iprising a substantially plane face bottoni member, and adjustable, resilient fastening devices attached to said bottom and having means to grip the ironing board on which the holder is to be mounted, said devices -including shaft members longitudinally shiftable and guided on the lower face of the bottom meniber and having lingers with gripping terminals to be passed under the ironing board, the lingers being connected to their respective shafts by spring forming portions to obtain the desired degree of resiliency.
2. An adjustable fiat iron holder comprising a sheet metal plate having legs struck from the plate and having tivo pairs of hooks struck from the metal in parallel transverse planes and having retaining lugs struck down from the metal one lug between the hooks of each pair and in opposition to thehooks, a shaft held against each pair of hooks by the lugs, the inner ends of the shafts having stop portions bent at right angles and the outer ends of the shafts having spring loops at right angles and lingers extending from the loops at right angles to the shafts and the lingers having inturned ends, the lingers extending in opposite direetions from the stop portions, so that the shafts may be moved inuf'ardly or outwardly to nt ironing boards of dilferent widths and so that the stop portions `will liinit the rotation of the shafts ann put tension on the lingers.
il. An adjustable flat iron holder eoinjjirising a plate, shafts slidabli.' mounted in parallel positions under the plate, said shafts havinO stop portions bent at righi' angles at their inner ends and the outer ends of the shafts hzwing spring lingers erztending at right angles in the opposite direction from the stop portions, said iii ers having inturned tips, so that the shafts may be moved inwardl57 or outwardly to fit ironing boards of dilferent Widths. and so that the stop portions will limit the rotation of the shafts and put tension on the lingers.
ln testimony whereof l have signed in v name to this speeilication.
AMOS A. BURNER.
