SELF-CLEANING COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.i3,t91l5.
Application filed September 2, 1914. Serial No. 859,883.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE HIBBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Dam, in the county of Ohio and State of Kentucky, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Self-Clean- .ing Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in combs, and particularly to that class of combs which are selfcleani1'1g.
An object of this invention is the provision of a comb which is provided with a cleaner attachment, whereby the teeth of the comb will be automatically cleaned each time the teeth of the comb are drawn through the hair.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a comb which is provided with a cleaner attachment which may be quickly and easily attached to or removed from a comb.
IVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view partly in section of my improved self-cleaning comb; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4- is a sectional view on the line li of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of one end of the casing and the cleaner bar with the comb removed; and Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the detachable side and end wall of the casing.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a comb which is provided with the usual head or body portion 2 and teeth 3, the end teeth of the comb being preferably of greater width than the intermediate teeth. A casing' l surrounds the head of the comb, the side walls and end walls of the casing at its ends being elongated to provide guide ways 5 which are adapted to receive the opposite end teeth of the comb. The elongated end walls are provided at their extremities with inwardly projecting flanges 6 which engage under the end teeth of the comb to hold the same in position with relation to the easing, and one side wall and the end wall of one of the guide ways 5 is separable as shown at 7 in the drawing, the wall 7 being secured to the casing by set screws 8. A cleaner bar 9 is provided, the bar having a plurality of openings 10 therein to receive the teeth 3, the bar extending the entire length of the comb and being adapted to project at its ends within the guide ways Secured at one end to the casing 4 is a spring 10, the opposite'end of the spring being loosely passed through a loop 11 carried on the cleaner bar, the tension of the spring serving to normally retain the cleaner bar in its outermost position on the teeth of the comb.
' In assembling my improved device, the side wall and end wall 7 of the guide way 5 is removed, whereby the comb 1 may be disposed so that the head 2 thereof is arranged within the casing 4 and the end teeth of the comb are arranged within the guide ways 5, the cleaner bar 9 mounted on the teeth also having its ends disposed within the guide ways 5. When the comb is in this position, the removable side wall 7 is again placed in position to close the guide way 5, the wall being held in this position by the engagement of the set screw 8 with the casing. The free end of the spring 10' is then loosely disposed through the loop 11 and the comb is then ready for use. It will be seen that the inwardly extending flanges 6 of the guide ways 5 limit the outward movement of the cleaner bar 9 on the teeth, the bar being prevented from moving entirely off of the teeth.
In using my improved comb, the casing is grasped and as the teeth of the comb are drawn through the hair, the cleaner bar 9 will be forced inwardly upon the teeth against the tension of the spring 10, so that upon removal of the comb from engagement in the hair, the tension of the spring will force the cleaner bar to its outermost position, thereby automatically clean ing the teeth of the comb. By the provision of the detachable portion 7 of one of the guideways 5, it will be seen that when it is desired to remove the comb from the casing, the portion '7 may be detached therefrom whereby the comb may be readily slid from the open end of the casing, and upon mounting a new comb in the casing, the open end thereof may be closed by the attachment of the portion 7 of the guide ways to the casing by the set screws 8.
Havingthus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a comb, of a casing inclosing the back of the comb and extending down at the ends to form-guides the casing being detachable from the comb, a cleaner bar slidably mounted upon the comb teeth and engaging the guides, means urging the bar toward the'outer end of the teeth, and stops carried by the guides to limit the outward movement of the cleaner bar.
2. .The. combination with a comb, of a casing 'inclosing the back of the comb and extending down at the ends to form guides, said casing being detachable from the comb,
- inwardly turned flanges formed at the ex- I tremities of the guides adapted to engage Copies of this patent may be obtained for under the end teeth to support the comb, a cleaner bar slidably arranged upon the comb teeth and having its ends extended within the guides, and a spring urging the cleaner bar toward the inwardly turned flanges.
3. The combination with a comb, of a casing inclosing the back of the comb and extending down at the ends to form guides, the side and end walls of one of the guides being detachably connected with the casing, a cleaner bar slidably mounted upon the teeth, and a spring urging the cleaner bar toward the outer end of the teeth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
