Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 20, 1906.
Application salinit '4, 905; ser alize. 258325.
To all whom, it may concern: Be it known that I, AUSTIN Q. .GBAVEN, a citizenof the UnitedStatesof America, re-' siding at Providence, in the, county of Provi- Rhode Island, have invented newand useful Im rovementsin a Combined Comb Case and leaner, of which the following is a specification. J This invention relates to combs, the. object of the invention bei'ngto provide a combined pocket andself cleaningwo nb'in which the combp'roper is contained in a case so con-, structed as to eifect a cleaning oflthe teeth of the comb as the latter is moved inwardly into the case,' the .comb also embodying means whereby the combproper may be mechanically forced outwar and inward 'i'ela tively to. the containing-case, all parts of the the nature oifwhieh the description comb and the operating devices therefor be ing either carried by or inclosed within the case. I I
Withthe above and other oo ects in View, will more fully appear as roceeds, the-inventlon con-'- sists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter I fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
- Fig-6 is a sideelevation of a perspective 1ewofa coinb of the combined actuatin .In the accompanying drawings'Figure 1 is embodying the resent intention, showing thesaine in conition ior use. 1 Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec tion, .throughthesame, showil'ig the teeth projected. Fig. 3 is a similar section show:
Fig. 4 is a plan view and looking slide. the thumb-piece. the case, end Fig. 7 is a bottom edge View of the same; Like referencemumerals designate corresponding parts in all thefigures of' the draw- Fig. 5 is a detail-view 0i length of the case and is of a *vided with a large numbe'r'of holes,
tweenwhich the teeth5 ofthe comb thecoinbis inoved'inward or thrust The comb contemplated in this invention comprises, 'essentially', a easel of suitable length and widthto contain and entirely in; close a comb 2', which extends the entireproximately thesame width as the inside of t 1e case. l The bottcmedge of the case is perforated or proinside tocontain both the comb 2 'and ga combined a'ctuatin'g and locking slide 6,: which may consist of a thin plate, which is shorter thanthe. internal dimensions of the easel, so thats a'id plate may move endwise to aliinited extent therein. The plate 6 is provided with inclined oroblique slots 7, extending nearly iroln'edgeto edge, and the lower portions of said slots areprovided with looking extensions oriangular portionslS, the urpose'of which will appear; .The back off; e co1nb 2 is proyided with ins or studs 9, which enter: and work in the s ots 7 as the plate-6 is mowed endwise within the case, the arrangement \of the slots. and pins'beingsuch that-as said slide is movedendwisethe combprop'er is 70. forced either inward or outward according to the direction of movement of the slide. l-
,7 lnorder to operate'the slide, the case 1 is g provided near. 1138 upper ed e-and' in both sides .with oppositely-locate slots 10, r un' nin parallelto the upper edge of the case, and said slots are covered by a sliding thumb piece 11, having" flanges 12,-whieh embrace, the'u per edge of the case',as.shown in 1, and guide said thumb-piece in its sliding movements. A pin 13 passes throu h the l thumb-piece'll and also throu h the s ots 10 in the cas e and alsothrough adiole 14 inthe plateor slide 6, so .thatas the thu1nb+piece is moved. e'ndwise onthecase 1 the slide or plate 8 5 6 is correspondingly moved within the case, i said slide operatingupon thepins9 to eithe force the comb outward or inward.
As the comb is forced outward'the, teeth 5. thereof move through the per 'orations 3 and 0 between the cross-bars 4 until the teeth are fully projected, asshown in Fig. 1. In the 7 reverse movement of the slide the teeth are drawn inward betweenthe cross-bars 4, and all material adhering tothe teeth of the comb 5 is scraped and 'removed' therefrom.' The comb may thus besaid'to be self-cleaning, and also by reason of the constructiende scribed the combis-well adapted for pocket 7 use, the teeth when retracted being protected; 10o b thesurrcunding and inclosing case, which also prevents thee dniission of dirt, dust, and other matter to theteeth of the comb, also to the operatingdevices therefor The bomb as a whole may otcourse be made in various sizes and'of. anysuitablemi terial, and other changesin the form, proportions, and minor details of construction "may be resorted to without departing from I the comb-actuating means within the case, the principle or sacrificing any of the advan- 5 said pin operating within the slot formed in ta esof the invention. 1 I
