'.BURLINGr-COMBS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES MARYNS and RICHARD VERLINDE, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burling-Combs, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in burling combs, the object of the invention being to provide improved mounting for oppositely disposed combs, and improved means for adjusting the angle of the combs to regulate the depth of combing.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view illustrating a preferred form of our improvements. Fig. 2, is a view in cross section through one of the adj usting rods. Fig. 3, is a similar view showing the parts adjusted to a different position. Fig. 4, is a broken rear view illustrating a modification. Figs. 5 and 6, are views in cross section of Fig. 4, showing dierent positions of attachment.
1, 1, represent bars of wood or other suitable material connected at their forward edges at their ends by hinges 2. The forward edges of the bars 1, between the hinges 2, are beveled or inclined as shown at 3, and metal combs 4 are secured to these beveled edges by means of screws 5, and it will be seen that by reason of the beveled edges, the combs are disposed at an angle to the bars 1, and the teeth of said combs at the inner edges thereof, are positioned to engage the goods and thoroughly comb them. To adjust the angle of these combs, rods 6 are provided near the opposite ends of the bars 1. These rods extend through openings 7 in bars 1, and are provided with shoulders 8 near one end against which washers 9 are seated. Plates 10 and 11 respectively are secured to the bars 1 across said openings 7, one of said plates having an opening to receive the restricted end 12 of rod 6, and a cotter pin or other securing device 13 is passed through said pin outside of plate 11, so as to limit the movement of the rod in one direction. A coiled spring 14 is located on the rod between the washer 9 and the Specification of Letters Patent.

plate 11, and exerts pressure on the plate, and the member 1, so as to compel it to move with the rod. The other end of the rod 6 is screw threaded and engages screw threads in the other plate 10, and a button or thumb hold 15 is secured on the end of this screw to turn the same, while a washer 16 is interposed between said button 15 and the plate 11. It will thus be observed that by turning the rods 6 by means of their buttons 15, the members 1 can be moved apart or toward each other tov adjust the angle of the combs as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and thereby regulate the depth of combing,
it being understood that the operator grasps the bars 1 and moves the combs backward and forward over the cloth to thoroughly comb the same.
As shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, we illustrate a modified form of adjusting means for the combs, in which rack bars 17 are secured to one of the members 1, and are engaged by pinions 18 on the shaft 19. The shaft 19 is supported in suitable hangers 20, and is provided with a hand hold 21 to turn the same, and by reason of the engagement of the pinions 18 with racks 17, the members 1 may be adjusted to change the angle of the combs as may be desired. Openings 22 are provided in one of the members 1 to accommodate the racks 17 when the bars are moved toward each other.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from our invention, and hence we do not restrict ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such changes and alterations as' fairly fall within the spirit and scope of our invention.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising two bars, substantially parallel to each other, and having hinged connection at one edge, and a comb supported on each bar, whereby when said bars are moved upon their hinges, the angle of said combs will be changed.
2. A device of the character described, comprising two bars, substantially parallel to each other, hinges connecting said bars at their forward edges adjacent their ends, and a comb secured to the forward edge of each bar, whereby when said bars are moved on edges, hinges connecting said bars, a comb secured to each beveled edge, with the teeth of the combs projecting toward each other, and means for adjusting said bars relative to each other to change the angle of said combs.
4. A device of the character described,
comprising two bars, substantially parallel to each other, hinges connecting said bars at their forward edges adjacent their ends, said bars having beveled forward edges between said hinges, a comb secured to each beveled edge, and the teeth of the combs projecting toward each other, and means for adjusting said bars upon their hinges relative to each i other, whereby the angle of said combs will be changed.
A device of the character described, comprising two bars, substantially parallel to each other, hinges connecting the forward edges of the bars, a comb secured to each bar at its forward edge, rods having elastic connection at one end with one of said bars, and screw threaded connection at their other ends with the other bar, and buttons or thumb holds on said rods.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
