Description

No.866,173. PATBNTED SBPT.17, 1907. B. WILTON.
LOOKING DEVICE FOR GRATE BARS. APPLIOATIOH rmin we. a, 1906.
WITNESSES INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD WILTON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE H. CLARKE, OF
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. I
LOCKING DEVICE FOR GRATE-BARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Application filed August 6, 1906. gerial No. 329,288.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Grate-Bars, of which the following is a speci fication. I
My invention relates to improvements in looking devices for grate bars and the object of my invention is to provide an effective and simple means for locking grate bars against accidental movement. I accomplish this result by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of my device locked Fig. 2 is a view of the same from above Fig. 3 is a View of the device unlocked. Fig. 4 is a view of the device showing its operative relation to the grate.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The grate n is supported on the bar m, pivoted at each end in the frame of the furnace. The arm Z is fixed to the bar m at right angles and its free end is pivoted to the operating rod a upon the outer end section of which projecting through the outer face of the furnace f I provide a loose link ,b provided with a bent over end section b to rest against the face of the furnace f. This link b is provided with a longitudinal slot 6 and at its outer end is provided with a lateral cross slot b communicating with the longitudinal slot 6. The outer end of the rod (1 is provided with a forked head a to receive the arm d.
A retaining bolt 0 is passed through openings in the sides of the forked head a of the rod (1 and the end of the arm d, passing through the slot 0 and is retained by a screw nut h in the usual manner. A'washer g is also provided under the screw nut h. The parts being thus assembled and the rod a drawn out to its extreme length, the lateral slot b will engage the bolt 0 in the end of the rod (1 and the link b being of suitable length will prevent the accidental movement of the rod a and the grate to which it is attached at its opposite end.
When it is desired to move the grate, the outer end of the link a is raised and drawn out, the bolt a sliding in the longitudinal slot 6. The grate bar operating rod (1 will thus be released and may be operated by the arm or lever d fulcrumed in the stationary support on the face of the furnace f. v
The grate bar operating rod a is locked by drawing it out to its full length and dropping the lateral slot b over the bolt 0 as above described. I
I prefer to extend the lateral slot (2 across the end of the link I) so that either side may be used interchangeably. I also prefer to provide a handle b on the end of the link Z) for the convenience of the operator.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with the operating rod, a link having a bent end to rest against the face of the furnace, said link having a longitudinal slot and at its end opposite to said bent end having a lateral slot communicating with said longitudinal slot, an arm, and a bolt extending through said rod, said link and said arm.
2. In combination with the operating rod of a furnace grate, an operating arm for said rod, a link having a pair of communicating slots arranged at right angles to one another, a bolt passed through said rod, arm and link slots, said link being slidable on said bolt and adapted when said bolt is in one of said slots to have its inner end engage the furnacerface.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD WILTON.
Witnesses ADoLPn FISCHEL, JUSTIN S. GALLAND.
