TOILET OR LIKE COMB.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK WVILLIAM THOMPSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Nottingham, in England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in or Relating to Toilet or Like Combs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in toilet or like combs, of the kind which are provided with means whereby the teeth, and the spaces between them, can be readily and effectually cleared of all accumulation of hair, dirt, or other matter.

In the class of comb referred to, a cleaning bar or slide is provided, and this bar, which is formed with a separate opening for each tooth in the comb, is adapted to slide on the latter, that is, from the roots to the point of the teeth, and vice-versa. In combs with two sets of teeth, a cleaning bar is provided for each set, and they are connected so as to move together.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1. is a side view, and Fig. 2. a cross section of a comb constructed according to my invention. Fig. 3. is a side view showing the two cleaning bars detached. Fig. 1. is a side view showing my invention applied to a comb with one set of teeth.

In a comb with two sets of teeth, A and B, (see Figs. 1 and 2.) one set A being arranged opposite to the other B, and two cleaning bars C and D, that is one on each of the respective sets of teeth, the said cleaning bars are connected one to the other, by means of end pillars or members F, (see Fig. 1.) situated at the ends of the comb.

The two faces of the comb are thus left free and unobstructed, and itcan be readily held by one hand, while the cleaning bars C and D are both moved by holding the end pillars or members F with the other hand.

In order that the cleaning bars 0' and D may be detachable, the pillars or members F are made tubular, any they are rigidly connected to the ends of one cleaning bar C only. The other cleaning bar D has pins G (shown more clearly in, Fig. 3.) rigidly connected to its ends, and these pins G are disposed, so that they will engage in the tubular pillars or members F, and thus rigidly connect the two cleaning bars C and D together. To prevent accidental displacement, the extreme ends of the pins G are provided with catches G (see Fig. 3.) which engage with the inner ends of the respective tubular members F, as shown in Fig. 1.

In a comb with a single set of teeth A, as shown in Fig. 4, the cleaning bar C in connection with said teeth A, is connected to a double bar J sliding on the solid back H of the comb, which back is extended to receive the bar J.

By rigidly connecting the cleaning bar C to a bar J sliding on the extended back H of the comb, said cleaning bar C is always held square with the teeth A of the comb, and it will thus always slide freely over the said teeth, instead of canting and looking, as is the case when a cleaning bar is used without any other support. The bar J not only serves the purpose mentioned, but acts as a stop and prevents the accidental withdrawal of the cleaning bar C from the teeth A.

The cleaning bars O and D preferably each comprise side strips joined by cross members extending between the teeth of the comb, and forming openings between them through which said teeth pass.

It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims. 7

What I claim is- 1. The combination with a comb, of two bars sliding thereon one of which is a cleaning bar, tubular members secured to the ends of one bar, pins secured to the end of the other bar, said pins being adapted to engage in the tubular members to connect the two bars, and catches on the said pins adapted to retain them in position, substantially as described. 7

2. The combination with a comb of a sliding tooth cleaning bar, a bar sliding on a plain part at the back of the comb, and

means for connecting the said bars consisting of interengaging pillars and pins Which are situated at the ends of the comb and are rigidly attached to the ends of the respective sliding bars, substantially as described.
