BUCK-BAKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1918.
Application filed January 2, 1917. Serial No. 140,334.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J AMES J. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lone Grove, in the county of Carter and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Buck-Rake, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buck rakes and more particularly t means for detachably securing the teeth of a rake to the head thereof.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel form of fastening means which will snap into place when a tooth is inserted into the head and which fastening means can be readily shifted for the purpose of releasing the tooth so that the same can be removed if worn or broken or when it is desired to store the buck rake in a compact form.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed. can be made within the scope of what is claimed. without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a buck rake embodying the present improvements.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 and 2 designate parallel bars which are suitably connected to form the head of the buck rake. To the front bar 1 are attached angular brackets 3 having upstanding lips 4 at their front edges while additional angular brackets 5 are attached to the bar :2 and in line with the brackets 3, these brackets 3 and 5 being so proportioned as to receive and fit snugly upon the back ends of the teeth or fingers 6 of a buck rake.
Each of the fingers or teeth 6 has a stop strip 7 bolted or otherwise attached to the bottom thereof and having a downwardly extending portion 8 designed to come against the bar 1 when the finger is properly inserted into the brackets 3 and 5, thus to limit the backward movement of the tooth or finger.
Secured upon the upper face of the tooth 6 preferably by the same bolts 9 used for holding the strip 7 in position is a spring tongue 10 having an offset portion 11 forming the head of a latch from which projects a tongue 12. This offset portion is so located and proportioned that when the stop strip comes against the bar 1, said shoulder will spring over and engage the lip 4:, thus t hold the tooth or finger 6 against withdrawal from engagement with the brackets 3 and 5. IVhen it is desired to remove one of the teeth or fingers 6 it is merely necessary to lift upwardly on the free end of the tongue 12 so as to disengage the offset portion 11 of the lip 4. whereupon said tooth or finger can be withdrawn from the brackets.
It has been found that a buck rake utili7ing teeth such as herein described is very efficient and is advantageous because the teeth can be readily placed in or removed from position, thus permitting the device to be stored in a small space when not in use.
The backward thrust against the head through the teeth 6 is transmitted to the head by the stop strip 7 and there is therefore no danger of the brackets 3 and 5 becoming broken or distorted as a result of undue strain to which they might otherwise be subjected.
What is claimed is In a buck rake the combination with a head having alining brackets fixed thereon, of a lip upstanding from the front edge of one of the brackets, a tooth insertible longitudinally into the brackets, a stop strip on the bottom face of the tooth and having a depending portion movable against the head to limit the driving movement of the tooth into the brackets, a spring strip secured upon the top face of the tooth and having a downwardly offset portion for engaging the lip to lock the tooth against withdrawal from the brackets, a tongue inclined upwardly and rearwardly from the offset portion, and means extending through both the stop strip and the spring strip for binding them upon the, tooth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature 1n the presence of two wltnesses.
JAMES J. SIMPSON.
