Description

C. F. SMITH. IDENTIFICATION NAME PLATE FOR UMBRELIAS.
APPLICATION FILED 8.28, I916- Patented Mar. 27,1917.
CHARLES F. SMITH, SUNBUEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IDENTIFICATION NAME-PLATE FOR UIiIIBREI JLAS.
Application filed February 28, 1916.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CI-IARLEs F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunbury, in the county of Northumberland, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Identification NamePlates for Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an identification name plate for umbrellas.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a device which may be readily attached to a rib of an umbrella and which will contain a card indicating the name of the owner of the umbrella.
A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that when it is applied to the rib of an umbrella it will be securely held thereon and the card will be securely held in place.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy device attached to the rib of an umbrella;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the manner in which the parts are clamped together.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, I have illustrated a plate 1 which is provided with a rectangular opening 2 and at its edges with flanges or guides 3. Disposed upon this plate is a card 4 which is so arranged that the name of the owner of the umbrella, which appears thereon, will be visible through the opening 2. Superposed upon this card is an elongated Specification of Letters Patent.

pair of outwardly extending flanges 9 which 7 are adapted to engage within the flanges or guides 3 of the plate 1 and to bear upon the plate 5 so that it will be held securely in place and thus properly position the card l.
In using the device the plate 5 is placed against the rib of an umbrella and the keeper placed upon the opposite side of the rib. This keeper is then slid upon the plate 1 with the flanges 9 in engagement with the flanges or guides 3. After the parts are thus assembled the flanges 8 may be pressed so that they will frictionally bind against the flanges 9 and prevent the subsequent displacement of the keeper 7 and the consequent displacement of the entire device from -the rib of the umbrella. It will be seen that the manipulation of the flanges 3 will not only secure the keeper in place but will also cause the keeper to bear against the plate 5 and consequently maintain the plate 5 and the card 4 in their proper position.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple and inexpensive device which may be readily attached to an umbrella and which, after having been attached, may not be removed therefrom.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention it has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim, is i In an identification device adapted to be attached to an umbrella rib which is.U- shaped in cross-section a channeled plate arranged to embrace the outer face of said rib and provided with an opening, a plate ing the ends of the card and the ends of the arranged to bridge the edges of the rib and last mentioned plate. 1&1

plate, and an additional plat-e arranged to CHARLES F. SMITH. bridge and rest upon the edges of the rib Witnesses:
and to be disposed between the rib and the JOHN J. WATSON,
card, and bills on the bridging plate engag- HARRY FRY.
