MEMORANDUM-CALENDAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 9, 1917.
Application filed March 30, 1916. Serial No. 87,715.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK A. HALE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandumflalendars, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to a stand or base for memorandum calendars and the like and more particularly to those constructions in which filing wires or arches are employed for holding the calendar or other leaves. As the leaves must be renewed from time to time, as at the end of each year in case the device is used as a calendar, provision must be made for permitting the removal of the filing wires or arches from the base or stand.
On the other hand, and as an accidental displacement of the leaves during the ordinary use of the device would be exceedingly disadvantageous, the means employed for sewires or arches to the base or stand, although permitting a ready removal of the wires or arches when occasion requires, must be such as to positively insure against any accidental disconnection of the parts while in use.
The object of the invention is to provide a holder for memorandum calendars and the like which is of improved construction with reference to the manner in which the filing wires or arches are secured to the base or stand.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a form of memorandum calendar in which the features of improvement provided by the invention may be embodied, Fig. 2 is a sectional view with the leaves of the calendar pad omitted and with some of the parts shown in elevation, the plane of the section being indicated 22 on Fig. 8. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4. is a detail plan view showing a form of latch bar which may be used in the improved construction.
The calendar pad is generally represented in the drawings at 10. This pad is not claimed herein for the reason that such claims have been made in my pending application for patent on calendar pad, Serial No. 862,289, filed September 18, 19141.
The present invention has more particular reference to. a construction in which the filing wires 14, 15 are of unequal span and are arranged in a common plane. The specific construction shown is in the nature of an improvement upon that forming the subject of Patent No. 1,179,093, for stand for memorandum calendars, issued to me April 11, 1916. Under these circumstances the ends of the arches are preferably connected with an inclined base or stand 16, the plane of the arches being transverse to and adj acent the higher or rear edge of the stand. The stand 16 may be made of sheet metal in which case it is preferably formed with a depending rolled bead or flange 17, for engagement with the table, at its lower or forward edge, and with the sheet metal extended downwardly and forwardly under the upper or an upwardly facing groove or channel 18 below the stand. The groove or channel 18 serves both as a supporting leg for the rear edge of the stand, and as a socket for receiving the ends of the filing wires or arches 1 1-, 15. As shown, the lower ends of the arches 14, 15, are entered in the socket 18 by being passed through apertures 21 which are provided in the stand 16 and are arranged in a row extending transversely across the stand adjacent its rear edge and in direct alinement with the said socket. The sheet metal from which the stand 16 is formed, is also preferably turned downwardly at the ends of the stand to provide depending flanges 19 and 20, but these level of the lower edges of the bead 17 and socket 18 and they are accordingly held out of engagement with the surface upon which the stand rests.
In carrying out the invention, the filing wires or arches H, 15, are provided with lateral notches, as 24-, 25, 27 and 28. The notches, as 27, 28 of the smaller or inner arch 1-1, are preferably outwardly facing and are located at a suitable level to be engaged with the stand 16 at the margins of the corresponding apertures 21 when the ends of the arch are entered in the groove or socket 18. The disengagement of the arch 14: from the base or stand 16, accordingly requires that the arch must first be laterally compressed. The notches 24, 25, of the larger arch, as 15, on the other hand, preferably face inwardly and they are located just below the under side of the base or stand 16, when the ends of the arch are seated in the rear edge of the stand to provide flanges do not extend to the groove or socket 18. Under these circumstances both arches will be held against disengagement with the base or stand 16 if a latch plate, as 22, is provided for the engagement with the notches 24, 25, of the arch l5 and this latch plate, as 22, is also pro vided with means for preventing the lateral compression of the arch 14. As shown, the latch plate 22, is arranged to swing against the under side of the base or stand 16 upon one side of the arch 15, as a pivot. For this purpose the latch plate 22 is provided with an aperture 23 at one end, and, the parts being symmetrically arranged, either side of the arch 15 may be threaded through the said aperture 23. A rounded shoulder 26 is formed at the other end of the latch plate 22 for engagement with the notch 24, 25 at the corresponding side of the arch 15. It will. be understood that when the rounded shoulder 26 of the latch plate 22 is engaged with the notch, as 25 at one side of the arch 15, that part of the latch plate which is immediately adjacent the inner margin of the aperture 23 will be engaged with the notch, as 24, at the other side of the said arch. The arch 15 is thus firmly held against disengagement from the base or stand 16 and can only be removed if the latch plate 22 is first swung to a position in which the rounded shoulder 26 is disengaged from the notch, as 25, of the arch.
To prevent the compression of the arch 14, necessary to the removal of said arch, the latch plate 22 is provided with a lateral projection 29 which is of a proper width to fit the space between the two sides of the arch. This projection enters the space between the two sides of the arch 14 only when the latch plate 22 is in that position in which its two ends are engaged with the two sides of the arch 15. The construction accordingly permits a ready removal of the arches 14, 15, when such removal is required, but efiectually serves to hold the said arches against removal at all other times.
I claim as my invention,
1. A holder for pad calendars comprising,
in combination, a base plate having a pair of apertures extending through the same, a filing arch having its two end portions extended through the apertures of the base plate, each of the said end portions of the arch being notched upon the inside below the base plate and a latch adapted to swing on one of the end portions of the arch as a pivot in line with its said notch and to enter the notch of the other end portion of the arch.
2. A holder for pad calendars comprising, in combination, a base plate having a row of apertures extending through the same, a pair of elastic filing arches of unequal span each arch having both of its end portions extended through apertures of the base plate, the two end portions of the smaller arch being notched upon the outside and the said notches being engaged with the plate at the outer margins of the corresponding apertures, the two end portions of the larger arch being notched upon the inside below the base plate, and a latch adapted to swing on one of the end portions of the larger arch as a pivot in line with its said notch and to enter the notch of the other end portion of the larger arch, the said latch being provided with a lateral projection which enters the space between the two end portions of the smaller arch and is of a width equal to the distance between the end portions of the smaller arch when the said arch is elastically expanded for the said engagement of its notches with the base plate.
3. A holder for pad calendars and the like comprising, in combination, a base plate having a pair of apertures, an upright filing arch having its two end portions extended through the apertures of the base plate, both of the said end portions of the arch being notched below the. plate, and a latch adapted to swing on the notched part of one of the end portions of the arch as a pivot and to enter the notch of the other end portion of the notch.
