EDWARD BLOUNT WINTERS, OF COFFEYVILLE, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO THE JOHNSON SPRING GARTER (30., OF COFFEYVILLE, KANSAS.
GARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915.
Application filed June 3, 191 Serial No. 842,682.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. WINTERS, a ctizen of the United States, and a resident of Cotfeyville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garters, and is an impro'ement o er the forms shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,022,217, issued to me April 2, 191.2, and my applications for Letters Patent filed March 25, 1914: and May 19, 1914, Serial Nos. 827,116 and 839,523,respectively, resembling the form shown in the first named application most nearly, but is distinctive therefrom by the fact that, while I still employ the inelastic bands, bifurcated shield, and yokespring, the spring arms are firmly secured to the shield, one end of the band is permanently secured to the shield, and the other end thereof is in detachable connection with the shield, this being my present preferred form of construction.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, and in which I have shown a band a, permanently secured at one end to the shield Z) and in detachable connection, at the other end, with a loop a on the shield by means of an eye a and hook a, a sliding buckle a also being employed to adiust the length of the leg-band a.
The shield is divided into two similar members 71 and 6 held in normal iuxtaposition by means of a spring 0 formed into a coil 0 stitched to the shield, as shown at 7), and the ends 0 and 0 being upwardly directed and substantially parallel to a point adiacent the top of the shield, where said ends are turned on themselves in. a downward incline, as shown at c and 0, which ortions are stitched to the corresponding shield members as shown at b and b, the extreme ends of said s ring being turned inwardly, as shown at c and 0 to prevent their removal from the stitching. I also secure a dependent stocking clasp (Z to the shield and which may be of any desired construction, many forms thereof being now in use.
It will be understood that the spring arms 0 and c exert a strain toward each other, whereby the shield members will be returned to the normal position shown after having been forcibly pulled therefrom, thus provid ng a sufficient degree of elasticity to the leg-band whereby the garter accommodates itself to knee action on the part of the wearer, and I may, if desired, inclose the spring 0 within the fabric of the shield for concealment, but in its present position it is easily substituted if one should break or the elasticity thereof be lost.
MV garter is adjustable, and very easy on the leg; while I have shown certain pre ferred details, it will be obvious that these may be modified, within the scope of the following claims.
lVith such reservation, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A. garter, comprising a bifurcated shield, a leg band in permanent connection, at one end, therewith, means for detachably connecting the other end of the band with said shield, and a spring provided With firms secured to corresponding shield memers.
2. A garter, comprising a bifurcated shield, a le band in ermanent connection, at one end, therewith, means for detachably connecting the other end of the band with said shield, and a spring formed into a coil secured at the fork of said shield members and the ends thereof being upwardly directed and secured to corresponding shield members.
3. .A garter, comprising a bifurcated shield, a leg band in permanent connection, at one end, therewith, at the top of one of the shield members, means for detachably connecting the other end of the band to the upper portion of the other shield member, and a spring provided with arms arranged one on each side of the slit forming said bifurcation and secured to corresponding shield members, the extreme ends of said spring being formed to resist removal from In testimony whereof I have signed my said securing means. name to this specification in the presence of 10 4. A garter, comprising a shield provided the subscribing Witnesses.
With a pair of members separated by a slot, EDWARD BLOUNT VIYTERS 5 a spring mounted upon said shield and pro- I vided with extending portions secured to Witnesses: said members, and a leg band connected with D. H. MARTIN, said members. S. C. KEMON.
