HAT-PIN GUARD.
menses.
Application filed February 13, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ASA E. BACON, resid- .ing at Yates Center, in the county of Woodson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Pin Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hat pin guards, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a hat pin guard which need not be removed from the pin in order to insert the pin in the hat and through the hair of the wearer.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hat pin guard which will cover the point of a hat pin to prevent injury and said guard being adjustable on the pin to cover the point and to hold the pin firmly connected with the guard when passed through the hat and hair of the wearer.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the acompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of the hat pin and guard in position for insertion through a hat and through the hair of the wearer, the ball or knob of the hat pin being shown in full lines in one position and in dotted lines in another position, Fig. :2 is a fragmentary view showing the hat pin guard in one of its positions in dotted lines and in its protected position in full lines, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 38 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4: is a fragmentary detail view showing the two notches in the guard and said guard being broken away between the notches, Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the knob on the hat pin secured in one of the notches in the guard.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the tubular guard for the hat pin, said guard having a slightly contracted open end 2. At the opposite end the guard is provided with a longitudinal slot 3, said slot having an angular notch or branch 4: near Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1915.
Serial No. 818,515.
the outer end of the guard and a similar notch 5 at the inner end of the slot 3.
The hat pin 6 is provided at its outer end with a right angular shank 7, and connected to said shank is a ball or head 8.
The manner of using the hat pin and guard may be briefly described as follows: The pin 6 is inserted in the guard 1 until the point a of the pin projects through the contracted end 20f the guard. The shank 7 of the pin is then in position to be turned to one side to engage the notch 5 in the guard. The guard and the pin are then inserted in the hat and through the hair of the wearer, after which the ball 8 is grasped and moved to aline with the slot 3 in the guard and moved back to the notch l to retract the point (1 within the guard 1. The shank 7 is then turned into the notch 4 to hold the pin and guard in proper position, with the point of the pin within the guard, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a hat pin and guard made in accordance with this invention is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in use, and can be manufactured at low cost.
"What is claimed is 2-- A hat pin guard consisting of a tube open at both ends and having one end reduced, said tube being provided with a longitudinal slot extending from one end thereof and having notches extending laterally there from and communicating therewith formed in said tube, in combination with a hat pin inserted within the tube and having the end farthest removed from the pointed end,
thereof bent to extend at right angles to the body and provided with a head thereon, said right angularly extending portion adapted to extend within the notches to hold the pin in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
