HAT-FASTENER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,1 17, dated April 25, 1905.

Be it known that .1. hours Pnao'r'ri, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the follmving is a specification.

The iresent invention relates to im )rovements in ladies hatfasteners of the kind specilied in my previous applications, Serial No. 213,137. liled June 18, 1901, and Serial No. 211-150, filed July 21, 190%, and has for its object to arrange the same in such a manner that immaterial of the fashion of the hair it will secure the hat upon the head of the wearer.

In order to make the present invention more clear, the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding reference-munerals denote corresponding parts, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a hat-skeleton with a hat-fastener applied at the front and at the back of the hat. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a front and rear elevation of the hatfastener: Fig. 4:, a cross-section through line 1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a detail view of one end of the hat-fastener. Figs. 6 and T are front elevations of a modification, showing the hatfastener open and in workingposition; and Fig. 8, a cross-section through line of Fig. 6.

Referring to the drawings, the hat-fastener consists of a plate 1, having stitch-holes 2 for its attachmentto the hat and at-its lower end teeth 3, forming a comb. A second comb 16 is arranged at the back of the plate 1 and is attached thereto by projections 17 18, extending through longitudinal slots 19 20, arranged in the plate 1. These projections or pivots connect the two combs with each other and permit a longitudinal displacement of the back comb. In relation to the comb 1, owing to the slots 19 20 at one end of the comb 1 a longitudinal slot 21 is arranged, having circular ends. \Vithin said slot 21 a pivot 22 of oblong cross-section with rounded edges, Fig. 5, is attached to the back comb. hen the back comb 16 is moved in one or the other direction, the pivot 22 when turned with its oblongside in horizontal position is guided within the slot 21, in which it finally reaches 1 l l l either one of the circular ends of said slot. In this end position the pivot can be turned around its axis, so that it will abut against the shoulders 2t, formed at the points where the slot terminates into the circular holes, and will thus lock the back comb in either one of its end positions. The outer end of said pivot is provided with a head 23, having the shape of a ball, button, or the like and adapted to serve as a handle, by means of .which the back comb may be shifted to the right or left, so as to clamp the hair lwtween the teeth of both combs.

The teeth of the comb may be bent at the lower ends inward and slightly upward, as shown in Fig. -t. Owing to this bending of the teeth the same are allowed to easierci'igagc the hair at the roots thereof. A modilied form of this arrangement is shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8. Here the two combs are rigidly connected with and behind each other, the front comb being adapted to be attached to the hat in a similar way as in the above-specified arrangement. The teeth of said comb are provided at one side with an oblique smooth edge which at the root is circularly curved and at the other side with an edge that is more oblique than the former and that does not extend to its full length upward, but from a certain point, at about the middle, is broken and passes into an inwardly and upwarrilly extending preferably curved cut. At these points where the oblique smooth edge is broken or cut inward corners or shoulders are formed, as shown in Figs. 6 and T. The connection of the two outer combs is such that a free space is left between them, in which space a longitudinallymovable thirdcomb 26 of similar construction is arranged so as to be guided therein. The teeth of said third comb are similarly formed with shoulders, but on the opposite side of those of the two outer combs. It will be seen that by movingthis innercomb inward between the two outer combs the hair engaged by the teeth of the latter will be clamped between the shoulders of the outer combs and the movable inner comb. The inner comb can be locked in either of its end positions by means similar to those applied to the back comb, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and :k.

The hat-fastener of the present application can be applied to the hat not only at the front, but both at the front and back, Fig. 5, by which the use of hat-pins will be entirely dispensed with.

It will be understood that various modifications can be made with the different parts of the present hat-fastener, and I therefore do not Wish to restrict myself to the arrangements specified and shown.
