. Specification of Letters Patent. V
Patented oat, 13,1914.
To all whom t't'mag concern v Be it known that I, CECIL BILLINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goldwater, in the county of Comanche and Stateof Kansas, have invented anew and useful Combination Glove and Mitten, of which the following is a specification. p
The present invention appertains generally to gloves and mittens, and relates more particularly to a novel and improved combination glove and mitten. 1
It is the object of the present invention to provide a unique glove and mitten structure, wherebythe same may bereadily converted from a mitten into a glove and vice versa.
A. further object of the present invention is to provide a glove, having an independent index finger stall or pocket, in connection with means for embracing the finger stalls, whereby the glove may ordinarily be used in the form of a mitten.
With the foregoing general objects outlined and with other objects in view, which will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the present invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a palm view of the device in the form of a mitten. Fig. 2 is a back view thereof. Fig. 3 is a back view of'the device in the form of a glove, the flap being unwrapped and disposed upon the back of the glove. Fig. 4c is an enlarged cross section of the device, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the flap.
In carrying out the present invention,
there is provided a glove,'which may be constructed of cotton flannel, leather or any other desirable material, and which embodies the palm 1, and the back 2,.forming the bod of the glove. A thumb pocket or stall 3 is attached to the body, as usual, and the body is formed with an independent index finger stall or pocket 6i, and with a The free end of the flap 6 is provided with With the present device, when theindex secondpstall orpocket 5 for the remaining fingersof'the wearers hand.
The gist of the present inventionresides 1n the provi'sion ofa flap6, preferably of the same materialas the mitten itself, and
having one end attached to the back of the finger-pocket or stall 5, adjoining the index finger stall 4, asat 7 The loweredge of the flap 6 preferably extends below the finger stalls. )The flap-6 is adapted to be wrapped around the backof the index finger stall 4, so'as to pass over the forward sides of the finger stall, and then aroundthe littleor fourth finger, as indicated in Fig.s2. The upper edge' of the flap 6 is doubled, ad-
oming the basal portion of the flap, and r the said double portion is secured or attached'together in any suitable manner, as at 8, to provide a pocket 9 adapted to engage over the free end of the index finger stall.
a clasp or socket member 10, adapted to engage a clasp member 'or knob 11 secured upon the back of the body at the basal portion of the finger stall5.
The present glove and mitten is designed particularly for use by hunters, sportsmen,
drivers, and the like, who find it necessary to employ the. index finger in an untrammeled manner, and which is not permitted by a mitten. A glove, has the objection on the other hand, of exposing the fingers to the1cold,or giving less protection against the cold, than'a mitten, as is well known.
finger is not in actual use, the flap. G'Inay be wrapped around the index finger stall, and around the finger stall 5, so that the clasp 10 may be engaged to the clasp element 11, as seen in Fig. 2, whereby the finger stalls will be snugly heldtogether, as with a mitten. The pocket 9 'ofthe flapis arranged to engage over the free end of the index finger stall, and the flap 6 in being wrapped around the index finger, and around the finger stall 5, will hold the in: f dex finger stall snugly in. place, whereby the index finger will be protected and will be warmed. The flap 6 passing over the 'finger stalls, as stated, will also serve as a facing forincreasingthe wear of the glove and mitten, as is desirable.
y from the clasp elementll, and the flap may 110 then be unwrapped, and folded upon the back of the mitten, as seen in Fig. 3, so that the index finger may be moved in an untrammeled and free manner. If desired,
the free end of the flap 6 may be attached a to the clasp element 11, to maintain the flap upon the back of the mitten. It Will thus be manifest that the device may be readily v converted from a mitten into a glove, or
- dex finger, and a flap attached to the other stall and adapted to be Wrapped around the first mentioned stall, the flap having a pocket to engage over the free end of the first mentioned stall.
3. A glove embodying a pair of stalls, one being adapted to accommodate the index timer, and a flap attached to the other stall an adapted to be Wrapped around the first mentioned stall, the flap having a pocket to engage over the free end of the first mentioned stall, and interengaging means carried by the free end of the flap and the glove body for maintaining the flap in Wrapped condition.
In testimony that I claimvthe foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
CECIL BILLINGS.
