COVER FOR SHEET-MUSIC, MAGAZINES, AND THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY W. STAMPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Cover for Sheet-Music, Magazines, and the like, of which the following is aspecification.

The present invention relates to improvements in covers for sheet music, magazines and the like, one object of the present invention being the pro-vision of a flexible cover, which may be converted at will into a satchel, portfolio or a roll for carrying sheet music or the like, and which is provided with means whereby when the leaves of the same are extended, the sheet music or magazine may have its respective leaves extended, there being means provided for securing the sheet music or magazine within the cover so that the cover may be used as a backing therefor without the necessity of removing the sheet music or magazine during the use thereof.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a means secured to the respective leaves of the cover adjacent the folded portion thereof, whereby when the leaves of the cover are extended, the fold is held against extension, with the retaining means disposed in the same plane as the extended leaves.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of means whereby the sheet music or magazine may be attached to such holding means of the cover so that when the cover has its leaves extended, the pages of the sheet music or magazine maybe opened and the cover used as a back there- Ior.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafterdescribed and claimed, .it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail view of the preferred fastening carried by the sheet music and the securing means of the cover. Fig. 8 1s a cross section through the sheet cover showing the fastener holding pocket thereof.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a cover, which is composed of a single sheet of flexible material, the same being folded, as at 2 to provide the two leaves 3 and 4, the leaf 4 of which is provided with the fiap 5, to which at the folded edge exteriorly of the cover is attached the carrying handle 6. The pocket 7 is formed in the un der side of the flap 5, and constitutes a means for holding the fastening devices, as will presently appear.

As shown in Fig. 3, there is attached to the inner face of both of the leaves, a flexible non-elastic strip 8, which extends the full width of the cover, and bridges the folded portion, so that when the device is extended, as shown in Fig. 4, the fold 2 will be held against movement into the same plane as the leaves, while the body of the strip 8 will assume a position in substantially the same plane and consequently with its central portion out of contact with the inner portion of the fold. This strip 8 is provided with the two transverse slots 10, which provide a means for the reception of the fastening hooks 11 secured to and carried by the loose sheets thereof, in the present instance being sheet music, or a similar character of flexible backed magazine. It is to be understood that the fastening 11 may be dispensed with, and that pins may be employed to secure the folded edge of the flexible sheet to the strip 8, it being essential that the fold line thereof be attached to the strip 8, so that when the leaves of the cover are extended, the leaves of the sheet music or the like may also be opened in a flat condition and thus the cover may be used as the main backing or cover therefor without the necessity of removing the sheet music or magazine from the same.

In the form of device shown in Fig. 5, the three strips 8, 8 and 8 displace the single strip 8, as shown in Fig. 4, and provide a transverse slot 13 for the reception of the fastening devices carried by the sheet music or the like, the strips thus acting in a similar manner as the strip 8 and providing means whereby the sheet music or the like is secured thereto.

In the form of device as shown in Fig. (3, two strips 8 are secured to displace the single strip 8, as shown in Fig. 4 the respective ends thereof being disposed between the outer face of the main sheet and the alining strips 8 thus in another form accomplishing the same result as the strip 8 and ln'oviding a means for the attachment thereto of the folded edges of the sheet music or the like.

in all of the forms, it will be noted that the respective strips 8, 8, SS" and 8 provide a means for holding the folded portion of the leaves against assuming a position in the same plane with the leaves when extended, but which provide a means for at taching thereto the folded backs of the sheet music or the like, so that such music may be properly covered by the leaves of the main cover when the device is in the position shown in Fig. l or to be extended so that the oa 'es of the sheet music or the like ma be D opened and the present device used as a cover or backing therefor and not necessilate the removal of the sheet music or the like therefrom when it is desired to use or read from the same.

The present device is, at will, changed from the satchel, as shown in Fig. 1, to the portfolio, as shown in Fig. 2, or to the music roll, as shown in F 3, there being attached to the under side of the flap 5 a hook 1a, which when the device is employed as a satchel, engages the eye 15 carried upon the back of the leaf 3 thus providing a means whereby the sheet music or magazines withinth'e cover are maintained in a flattened condition.

In order to permit the cover to be folded to assume a portfolio shape, as shown in Fig. 2, the eye 16 is attached to the other leaf 4; beyond the fold thereof, so that the two leaves may be folded upon themselves and have the main fold thereof disposed adjac'ent to the fold of the handle carrying flap so that the hook may engage such eye and thus hold the parts in the positions as before mentioned, and as clearly shown in When it is desired to roll the cover to assume the music roll shape as shown in Fig. 3, the two leaves are rolled with the fold inwardly, so that the eye 17 carried upon the extreme outer face of the leaf may receive the hook and thus hold the cover in such rolled condition and against unrOlling.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that with a. flexible cover of this character, the same may be readily converted into a satchel, portfolio or music roll, as desired. It is also apparent that sheet music or the like may be properly positioned in the present cover to be held therein by a strip similar to the strip 8 or be pinned as may be desired.

What is claimed is:

l. A cover of the character described, including a sheet of flexible material folded to provide two main leaves, one leaf being provided with a folded end adapted to receive and envelop the edge of the other sheet when the sheet is constituting a satchel, a handle connected exteriorly of the inclosing sheet at the junction of the folded end thereof, a hook connected centrally of the free edge of the folded end, and three eyes connected to project exteriorly of the sheet, one of said eyes being disposed to receive the hook when the sheet is folded to form a satchel, the in termediate eye being disposed to receive the hook when the sheet is folded to form a portfolio, while the third eye is disposed to enthe hook when the sheet is forming a music roll.

A cover of the character described, including a sheet of flexible material folded to provide two main leaves, means attached to the inner faces of the sheet across the fold to prevent the fold from lying in the same plane as the sheet when the sheet is extended, one leaf being provided with a fold ed end adapted to receive and envelop the edge of the other sheet when the sheet is constituting a satchel, a handle connected exterior-1y of the inclosing sheet at the junction of the folded end thereof, a hook connected centrally of the free edge of the folded. end, and three eyes connected to project exteriorly of the sheet, one of said eyes being disposed to receive the hook when the sheet is folded to form a satchel, the intermediate eye being disposed to receive the hook when the sheet is folded to form a portfolio, while the third eye is disposed to engage the hook when the sheet is forming a music roll.
