Description
5 1956 A. T. CORREA COMBINED BOOK JACKET AND MARKER Filed March 5, 1954 M m x z W A n nited States Patent COMBKNED BOOK JACKET AND MARKER Alfred T. Correa, Bronx, N. Y. Application March 5, 1954, Serial No. 414,452
2 Claims. (Cl. 281--34) This invention relates to book jackets and proposes certain improvements in my prior application, Serial No. 336,850, filed February 13, 1953, for Combined Book Jacket and Marker.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a transparent book jacket adapted to be readily and easily slipped on and off a book and which includes self-adjustable means for securing the jacket to book covers of varying widths.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a jacket of the above type which includes a permanently attached book marker and which is formed entirely of transparent plastic which may be easily and readily washed when necessary.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a book jacket and marker of the above type bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is easy to use and efficient in operation.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book jacket embodying the features of the present invention and shown alone;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged transverse sectional view showing a modified form wherein welting is provided along the edges of the book jacket; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the jacket shown in operative use on a book.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, there is shown a book jacket indicated generally at and formed from a rectangular blank 11 of transparent plastic. This single blank 11 is folded inwardly upon itself at one end whereby to provide a pocket 12 adapted to receive therewithin one end of the book cover 13, as shown in Fig. 4. Opaque strips of border material 15 and 16 are secured to the longitudinal edges of blank 11 by means of stitching 17, this stitching and border strip serving to secure the pocket 12, as will be obvious, as well as reinforcing the edges of blank 11. The border material 15, 16 is formed of colored plastic to provide an ornamental effect as well.
The lateral end of blank 11 forming the opening to pocket 12 is similarly provided with border strip 18 secured thereto by stitching 19. This strip serving to reinforce this edge as well as providing an ornamental effect. The strip 18 is formed of the same colored plastic as strips 15 and 16.
A strip of colored plastic 20, preferably of the same material as the border strips 15, 16 and 18 is secured at one end by stitching 17 under border strip 15, as shown in Fig. 1, and extends downwardly across the blank 11.
A pair of elastic strips 21 and 22 are positioned as 2,753,194 Patented July 3, 1956 shown in Fig. 1, the upper ends being secured by stitching 17 under border strip 15, and the lower ends thereof being secured by stitching 17 under border strip 16, the strips 21 and 22 being disposed on either side of the central fold line of the jacket 10 and substantially parallel to each other and to the pocket 12.
The other end of the blank 11 is provided with curved edges shown providing a flap 26 adapted to be bent backwardly across the other cover 27 of book 23, the strips of border material 15 and 16 continuing around the flap 26, as shown. A doubled up reinforcing strip 28 is secured within the strip 15, 16 around the curved edge of flap 26, and surrounds a welting 29, as shown in the modification of Fig. 3. A grommet 30 is provided in the flap 26 and receives therethrough one end of a link 31 having hook-shaped ends, the other end thereof engaging the elastic strip 22 (Fig. 4). Thus, the elastic strip 22 will take up any slack automatically to accommodate the jacket to book covers of varying widths.
In use the covers 13 and 27 of book 23 are slipped into pocket 12 and under flap 26 with the strips 21 and 22 slipping over the covers on each side of the binding, firmly securing the jacket to the book and preventing an unsightly space between the back of the book and the inner face of jacket 10 adjacent thereto. The strips 21 and 22 may be expanded to accommodate covers 13 and 27 of varying thickness as well as varying widths. When it is desired to put the book away temporarily, the jacket 10 is left thereon and the strip 20 inserted between the pages as a convenient and ready marker.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, What is claimed is:
l. A book jacket comprising a substantially rectangular blank of flexible material adapted to be folded about a book and including a back portion, one end of said blank being folded inwardly and secured along the longitudinal edges thereof to form a pocket adapted to receive one cover of the book, the other end of said jacket being adapted to be folded back whereby to receive the other cover of the book, a pair of elastic strips substantially parallel to each other and to the lateral ends of the jacket, said strips being disposed on either side of said back portion and secured at each end to the longitudinal edges of the jacket, a flexible strip secured to the longitudinal edge of said jacket intermediate said back portion and said pocket whereby to provide a page marker when the book is closed, said other end of the blank adapted to be folded back across the other cover of the book having a reinforced opening, a double hook member having one end passing through said reinforced opening, the other opening of said member engaging one of said elastic strips.
2. A book jacket according to claim 1, said other end of said blank being provided with curved edges defining a flap, a doubled-up reinforcing strip secured to the edges of said flap and providing a tunnel, welting within said tunnel, and a reinforcing strip intermediate said welting and said tunnel.
