[Class 16.] A loose cover for a book or the like comprises a sheet of material folded over at its ends to provide flaps, and flexible extensible strips connected across the cover substantially parallel with the folded ends and passed through the flaps to grip them on the front and back covers of the book or the like. As shown in Fig. 1, the loose cover comprises an outer sheet 1 and an inner sheet 2 of opaque material such as leather cloth or linen cloth, or transparent material such as oiled silk or tracing cloth, united by sewing along the seams 3, each vertical edge of the sheet 1 being doubled over to provide a flap 4. Each flap is folded on itself and the end of the material is secured beneath a cardboard &c. stiffening-sheet 5 inserted at one side of a central portion 6 of the cover. The book is held in position by inserting the free edges of its cover under elastic strips 7 which are secured at their ends under the sheets 5 and carried through the tubular flaps 4. Handles 22 may be fitted to both sides of the cover. In the form shown in Fig. 3, each flap 4 has slots 10 engaged by a wide elastic strip 7a formed with one or more hooks 11 at each end, which are detachably engaged in eyes 12 formed in flaps 13 folded over from the horizontal edges of the cover. Instead of hooks and eyes the ends of the elastic strips 7a may be fitted with T-shaped pieces of metal which are engaged in eyeleted slots in the horizontal flaps. The title &c. may be exposed through openings 19a, 20 in the loose cover; such openings may be formed by cutting the outer sheet 1 and folding the material inwardly between the two sheets 1, 2 and then cutting away the exposed portion of the sheet 2. The openings may be covered by celluloid &c. Where the loose cover is of opaque linen cloth, portions may be oiled to produce transparent areas to reveal the title.
