To all whom, t may concern.'

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN TERT- HETMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Bandeau for Ladies Hats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved adjustable bandeau for ladies hats, arranged to enable the milliner or other person to readilj.l increase the size of the bearing portion of the bandeau to suit the head of the customer, thus insuring a proper fit of the hat on the head of the wearer.

In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a bandeau provided with annular offsets or ridges approximately steplike in cross section to permit of clipping olf one or more steps to provide a bandeau of a diameter fitting the wearers head.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a ladys hat provided with an adjustable bandeau forming an integral portion of the rim of the hat: Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of a detached bandeau; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same with one of the steps cut olf.

The bandeau A shown in Fig. 1 forms an integral part. of the inner edge of the rim B, and the said bandeau A is made approximately step-like in cross section, that is, is formed of a number of annular offsets, ridges or similar members A', A2, A3, of which the vertical portion of the upper member is preferably provide-d with a binding C. As shown in the drawing the members A2 and A3 of the bandeau are approximately of the same width, while the member A is of a width greater than the combined widths of the members A2 and A3. The crown D of the hat is made separable from the rim B and the bandeau A, and its lower edge rests on the rim B and the lower portion fits snugly onto the exterior face of the Specification of Letters Patent.

vertical portion of the lowermost member A of the bandeau, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The bandeau A may be made, however, separate from the rim B and the crown D, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and in this case the bandeau is provided on the lower edge with a lining C', and with a lining C2 at the upper edge, the lower lining C being fastened by stitches or other means to the crown D of the hat so as to hold the bandeau in place in the hat. In case the uppermost member A3 of the bandeau is too small to fit the wearers head then the milliner or other person clips off the uppermost member A3, that is, the vertical and horizontal portions, so that the next member A2 provides the proper size of bandeau for the wearer. In case a still larger bandeau is required, the second member A2 is cut off so that the vertical portion of the last member A provides a large-sized bandeau. It is understood thatI the milliner, after cutting off one or more members, provides the remaining upper member with a lining C so as to give the proper finish to the bandeau (see Fig. 3), which latter shows the bandeau illustrated in Fig. 2 with the upper member A3 cut 0E and the member A2 provided with the lining C2. If desired, the linings C, C', C2 may be reinforced, by the use of rings of wire or other material, a, attached to the upperedge of the bandeau and covered by the linin C2, and attached to the lower edge of the andeau and covered by the lining C.

The bandeau is preferably made of an open mesh woven fabric material rendered stiff by a suitable sizing or the like to give the desired stiffness to the bandeau.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a bandeau formed of three annular members, the members being of different diameters and secured one upon the other to give the bandeau a step-like shape in cross section, the two upper members being approximately of the same width and the lower member being of a width greater than the combined width of the said upper members.

2. A hat provided with a rim, a bandeau extending integrally from the inner edge of the rim and having a series of oset annular members extending inwardly and upwardly from the said inner edge of the rim, and a lining for the vertical portion of the uppermost offset member.

3. A hat comprising a rim having an integral bandeau, the bandeau having a Series of oii'set annular members, and a crown rest ing upon the brim and tting the exterior face of the vertical portion of the lowermost 10 member of the bandeau.
