THOMAS MELVIN BROOKMAN, OF ELMIRA, NEW YOBK.
FASTENER FOR IRONING-BOARD COVERS.
osaaee.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. BROOK- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elmira, in the county of C'hemung and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastener for Ironing-Board Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to covers for ironing boards such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,035,683, granted to me on August 13, 1912.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved fastener for the cover of an ironing board, arranged to per mit of conveniently and properly stretching the cover over the board and securely fastoning the same in place on the board, and to permit of removing the cover from the board for removal and renewal of the facing sheets of the body of the cover.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of detachable members held at the sides of the cover, the members being arranged in pairs located opposite each other, a cord attached to one of the members of a pair and a retaining loop on the other member of a pair and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the said cord.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an under side View of the fasteners as applied to the cover in position on an ironing board; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of one of the fasteners, part being in section; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a cross section of the same on the line 44t of Fig. 2.
The cover A for the ironing board B is stretched over the same and securely fastened in place by a series of fasteners C removably attached to the sides of the cover A to permit of removing the facing sheets A, A from the body A of the cover A whenever it is desired to renew the said sheets. The body A is preferably made of felt or similar material while the facing sheets A and A are of cotton or similar material.
Each of thelfasten'ers c consists of a. pair of/stap'ls l) and D removably passed "through openings in the cover A adjacent Specification of Letters Patent.

the sides thereof, each staple l), D being provided with flanges D extending in opposite directions and resting on the facing sheet A as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. The staples D, D project beyond the facing sheet A and pass through washers E resting against the facing sheet A, and the outer ends of the staples D and D are adapted to be engaged by removable hooks F, F extending transversely toward each other and holding the staples and their washers in position. To the hook F is secured one end of a cord G adapted to be passed through and engaged with a retaining loop H held on the opposite hook F to connect the hooks F and F with each other. The free end of the retaining loop H'is provided with a narrowing slot for receiving and holding the free end of the cord G, it being understood that in fastening the cover A in place on the board B the user exerts a pull on the cord G in the direction toward the retain ing loop H held stationary by the user, and then the free end of the cord is passed through the loop and engaged with the narrow end thereof, so that the retaining loop securely holds the end of the cord in position. It is understood that by the arrangement described the several fasteners G permit of properly stretching the cover A over the board B and fastening the same in place.
\Vhenever it is desired to remove the cover A. from the board B the user simply disengages the free ends of the cords G from the loops H and then the several fasteners C can be removed from the body A for convenient renewal of the facing sheets A and A In order to do this the hooks F and F are unhooked from the staples D and D and then the staples are pulled out of the cover A to permit of renewing the facing sheets A and A After the facing sheets have been removed the staples D and D are re placed together with the washers E and then the hooks F and F are hooked onto the staples so as to hold the same in place on the cover A. The latter can now be again stretched over the board B and fastened thereto as above explained.
- The fastener shown ant. descnoet is rely simple and durable in construction and can be readily manipulated for properly stretching the cover over the boa rd or to allow convenient removal of the facing sheets and re newal thereof whenever it is desired to do so.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A fastener for ironing board covers, comprising detachable members extending through openings in the cover adjacent the sides thereof, the members being arranged in pairs located opposite each other and having loop portions projecting from the face of the cover, hook members also arranged in pairs and removably connected With the said projecting loop portions, a cord attached to one of the hook members of a pair, and a ret aining loop on the other hook member of the pair and adapted to be engaged by the free end of said cord.
2. A fastener for ironing board covers, comprising staples adapted to extend through openings in the cover adjacent the sides thereof, and having flanges engaging the under side of the cover, Washers fitting over the staples and resting against the top of the cover, hook members removably engaging the said staples, and means for connecting the hook members With each other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
