IRONING COVER Fon SEWING MACHINE LID Filed Aug. e. 1964 f lll/[H H IVM/mm1 [VVV/(Huhn VW (I) n l) F/GZ IN VENTOR.
JAA/WA (M2/VWM United States Patent C 3 266 182 rRoNING COVER FR sEwING MACHINE LID Sandra Cournoyer, 2457 Felrnandez Drive, Sacramento, Ca if. Filed Aug. 6, 1964, Ser. No. 387,973 2 Claims. (Cl. 38-140) This invention relates to a cover for a sewing machine lid and more particularly to a means for transforming the opened lid of a sewing machine into an ironing surface.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of a device ot the type described which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and eicient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and maintain.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a cover for a sewing machine lid which includes a scorch proof material covering the upper surface of the lid when the lid is disposed in its opened position to permit the seamstress to press or iron the material on .which she is working without having to move to a separate ironing board.
A further obiect of the instant invention is the provision out an ironing cover for a sewing machine lid which can be maintained on the l-id when the lid is moved toits closed position providing a decorative surface for the sewing machine cabinet.
Yet another orb-ject of this invention is the provision of such a device wherein separate decorative means may be removably secured to the upper surface of the ironing cover when the lid ot the sewing machine cabinet is in its closed position.
Other and further objects reside in the combination of elements, arrangement of parts, and features of construction.
Still other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed ont as the description of the invention proceeds and as shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of a conventional sewing machine cabinet having a cover in accordance with the instant inventive concept carried by its lid, the opened position of the lid bein-g shown in dotted lines; and
FIGURE 2 is a transverse cross-sectional View taken substantially on line 2 2 ot FIGURE 1 with a removable decorative means being shovvn in dotted lines.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing, a conventional sewing machine cabinet is designated generally by the reference numeral and is comprised basically of a plurality of legs 12, a hingedly carried support 14 movable from the closed position shown in full lines to the dotted position shovwn at 14' in dotted lines, and a lid 16 movable from the closed position shown in full lines to the opened position shown at 16 in dotted lines. =1n the closed position of the lid it overlies the sewing machinery (not shown) for protection of the same and in the opened position it exposes the same for use in a conventional manner, a knee operated control means for the sewing device being shown at 18.
The covering of the instant invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 20- and may be made of any desired material to be slid-ably received over the lid 16, at least the portion of acovering 20 disposed on top of the lid 16 when the lid is in the opened position being 3,266,182 Patented August 16, 1966 ICC formed of a sco-rch proof material to define an ironing surface. Preferably, the covering 20` is formed of three layers bonded or otherwise secured together in any conventional manner such as by seams 212 to deline a pocket for slidingly engaging over the lid 16. The individual layers may vary within the scope of the instant inventive concept, but the inner layer 24 is preferably formed of a relatively soit, non-matting furniture engaging material which may be either a conventional fabric such as a cotton-rayon material or a non-slip foam material such as a polyester or a polyurethane foam material. The intermediate layer 26 is preferably iireproof or non-flammable an-d may be forme-d of either a fiberglass or an asbestos compound. The outer scorch proof laye-r is preferably impregnated with a lubricating or easy glide subst-ance such as Teilon to facilitate moving an iron thereacross.
The portion of the covering 20 disposed on top of the lid 16 when the lid is in its closed position may include any conventional decorative means to ren-der the same attractive in appearance whereby it may be maintained on the lid even when the sewing machine is not being utilized. This may merely include a printed or painted design or it may incorporate a removably secured decorative means such as the artificial iioral arrangement shown at 30. lf desired, this decorative means may be removably secured to the covering 20 in any conventional manner such as by the snaps 32 shown in FIGURE 2 Awhereby it may be readily replaced by other decorative means to vary the same or to more readily lit in with the decor of the room in which the sewing machine is utilized.
The use and operation of the device of the instant inve-ntion will be apparent from the above description.
It will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved ironing cover for sewing machine lid-s which satisfies all of the objectives of the instant invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commerci-al importance.
Since many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and since many modilications may be made of the embodiments hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter here-in is to be interpreted merely as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. A covering specifically adapted for use with the lid of a sewing machine cabinet fold-able from an open position exposing a sewing machine for use and a closed position overlying the sewing machine for protection, said covering comprising a lirst surface and a second surface, said trst surface when said lid is in open position comprising an upper ironing surltace, and said second sur-face comprising a top covering when the lid is in closed position, said surfaces being stitched together along three sides, the fourth side being open to define a pocket adapted to be slipped over said lid, fastener means on said second surface, and a decorative element releasalbly secured to said fastener means tor exposure on the top of the sewing machine when the lid is in closed position.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein said first and second surfaces are each comprised o-f three layers, an inner layer comprised of a relatively sott non-marring furniture engaging material including a non-slip polyurethane foam material, an intermediate layer of fireproof non-flammable liber-glass, and an outer layer of Scorch-proof material irnpregnated with Teflon to facilitate moving an. iron thereover.
