Abstract

Mfr. of unlined coats of a light and supple construction is effected in two ways. First, where two fabrics are to be joined by seaming, the edge of the first fabric is over-seqn, and the second fabric is sewn flat on to it. The edge of the second fabric is trimmed by cutting flush tothe seam. The second fabric is then turned, and a second seam is effected by the side of, or on, the oversewn edge. Second, on the vertical facing of the garment, a narrow band of stiffening is folded into the oversewn hem. Two parallel lines of stitching are introduced, one near to the fold of the hem, and the other near to the oversewn edge. In the absence of a lining, the coat must to offer a finished appearance. To maintain a light and supple construction, seams are trimmed to the min. and vertical facings, which by known techniques can contain as many as five thicknesses of cloth, are restricted to a stiffened, oversewn hem, thus avoiding ugly, bulky extra thickness.
