Abstract
A pair of trousers having a waist band made up of a composite outer band with an outermost layer and a stiffening insert layer, and an inner lining band. The composite outer band and inner lining band are each folded downward around a waist margin and upward around a leg margin. The two bands are secured together along their top and bottom edges by seams. The seam along the waist margins of the bands extends through the folded portion only of the outer band to provide a concealed seam. The seam along the leg margins extends through the folded portions of both bands and an interposed portion of garment fabric to provide a visible seam.

[57] ABSTRACT A pair of trousers having a waist band made up of a composite outer band with an outermost layer and a stiffening insert layer, and an inner lining band.
2 Claims, 1 Drawing Figure TROUSERS This invention relates to a waisted garment, in particular a pair of trousers, of the type in which the waist band is provided with a stiffening insert. The waist band consists of an outer band which is folded at the upper, sealing edge of the garment and at the part adjacent the leg portion, and which is also sewed to an inner lining band. The inner lining band is likewise folded, and the garment fabric is inserted at the leg side between the outer band and the inner lining band and sewn in.
In order to produce a satisfactory form of such a waist band, it is necessary in known methods to carry out the manufacture in three stages. Firstly the outer band is sewed together with the inner lining band along the sealing edge, i.e., the upper garment edge. The outer band is then sewn onto the garment fabric, and finally the inner lining band is sewn to the garment fabric. Folded edges at the upper edge and the edge adjacent the garment may be formed either by means of ironing or by previous ironing of a waist band insert or a waist band stiffener. However, in either case three sewing processes are required.
The present invention aims to provide a waist band which is substantially easier to manufacture than prior waist bands for trousers.
The invention consists in a waisted garment having a waist band comprising a composite layer outer band with an outermost layer and an insert layer secured thereto, and an inner lining band, each folded back along a waist margin and a leg margin and secured face to face by seams at the folded portions; the seam along the leg margins extending through both folded portions and an interposed portion ofa garment fabric to constitute a visible seam, and the seam along the waist margins extending through the folded portion of the lining band but the margin only of the outer band to constitute a concealed seam.
Preferably the insert layer extends beyond the fold along at least one margin; the insert layer may be marked with a line of weakness along the fold. The insert layer is preferably glued to the outermost layer of the outer band, and may consist of a thin fleecy material capable of being ironed on.
The insert and the outer band may be developed with the same covering, so that the cutting edges of the insert extend as far as the corresponding cutting edges of the outer band.
The invention will be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a schematic cross-section through the waist band of a pair of trousers.
In the drawings, the waist band 1 essentially comprises an outer band 2 having folds a and 5b and an inner lining band 3. The outer band 2 is provided with an insert 4 of fleecy material which is glued thereto and has been ironed on. At the folds 5a and 5b the insert is marked with lines of weakness, for example perforations (not shown). A further waist band insert 11 is provided adjacent the inner surface of the lining band 3.
The outer band 2 is firstly secured along the waisted edge a to the lining band 3 by forming folded portions 70 8a at the ends of bands 2 and 3, respectively, and securing the margin only of the portion 7a to the folded portion 8a by means of a seam 6. Th seam 6 is arranged to run adjacent the upper edge 11a of the waist band insert 11, the insert 11 being of a more solid material which will be difficult to seam through. The outer band 2 is then folded over at 5a and along the line of weakness of the insert 4 to the position shown in the drawmg.
The outer band 2 is then folded over 5b at the edge adjacent the leg portion to form the folded portion 7b. The trouser material 9 is inserted between the folded portion 7b and a folded portion 8b which has been previously formed at the leg margin of the lining band 3. The trouser material is held between the lining band 3 and the outer band 2 by means of one visible seam 10.
Thus, a trouser waist band is formed with only two sewing processes, while avoiding all intermediate ironing processes. This is possible particularly because the insert 4 of fleecy material which is glued to the outer band 2 extends along the folded portion 7b, and because of the line of weakness a sharp fold 5b can be formed. It is thus possible to ensure sewing together of three parts, that is the outer band 2, the trouser material 9, and the lining band 3, with a single visible seam.
I claim:
1. A waisted garment having a waist band comprising a composite outer band with an outermost layer and an insert layer secured thereto, and an inner lining band, said secured outermost and insert layers and said inner lining band being folded back toward each other along each of the margin of the waisted garment and outer; margin and secured face to face by a seam at each folded portion; the seam along the margin of the garment extending completely through both folded portions both said layers, said inner lining band; and an interposed portion of garment fabric to constitute a visible seam, and the seam along the outer margin extending completely through the folded portion of the lining band and said lining hand but through the folded over margin only of the outer band to constitute a concealed seam whereby said waistband includes only a pair of seams, one being visible along the margin of the garment and the other being concealed along the outer margin.
2. A method of making a waist band (1) with an outer band (2) and an inner lining band (3), and attaching the same to a waisted garment (9), using only two lines of seam stitching, of which only one seam is visible from the outside of the finished garment, comprising the steps of:
1. forming folded portions at the waist margins of said outer band and said inner band, and seaming the folded portion of said lining band to the inwardly turned margin only of the outer band to form a concealed seam;
2. folding the leg margin of said outer band under, so that it lies against the inner surface of the outer band;
3. inserting the top edge portion of the garment fabric between said folded leg margin portion of said outer band and the leg margin of said inner band; and
4. seaming said folded leg margin of said outer band to said leg margin of the inner band, with said garment fabric interposed therebetween to form an exposed seam.
Claims (5)
2. folding the leg margin of said outer band under, so that it lies against the inner surface of the outer band;
3. inserting the top edge portion of the garment fabric between said folded leg margin portion of said outer band and the leg margin of said inner band; and
4. seaming said folded leg margin of said outer band to said leg margin of the inner band, with said garment fabric interposed therebetween to form an exposed seam.
