IRONING-TABLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,721, dated November 1'7, 1885. Application filed December 9, 1884. Serial No. 149,840. (No model.)

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUsTA MOBLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards, of which the following i-s a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention has for its object the production of an ironing-board which shall be adapted to readily receive the garment to be ironed-such, for instance, as a skirt, shirt, 8vo-and to allow its convenient manipulation upon the board.

The invention is also intended to serve as an ordinary kitchen-table when not in use as an ironing-board; or it may serve, simultaneously, as au ironing-board and a table.

The employment of the ordinary ironingboard has been found to be inconvenient, and when, as it ordinarily is, mounted upon the backs of two chairs is liable to be knocked over or to form an obstruction to free movement about a small room. It is also generally found to be in the way when not in use.

My invention when not employed as an ironing-board or a table, may be folded down so as to be entirely out of the way, as in the case of ordinary folding tables long in approved use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the board adapted to receive a garment to be ironed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the invention arranged to form an ordinary table. Fig. 3 shows the invention foldeddown. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a modification of the invention.

A is a board or plank, which is attached to the wall or any other suitable support by nails or in any other suitable manner. By preference the board A is surrounded at its edges by strips a of a depth somewhat greater than the thickness of the ironing-board. The ironing-board proper is shown by B, it being hinged to the upper strip, a, as shown. The

board from the point b is cut out, forming the part b', which part is intended to receive the garment to be ironed. The part b may have parallel sides, as shown in full lines, or be made narrower at its outer extremity, as shown in dotted lines. A smaller hinged board, C, is hinged to the upper strip, a, which board is of a shape corresponding to that of the removed part of the board A, and when in position, as shown in Fig. 2, forms, with the board B, a table of extended area, which may be used as a kitchen dining-table, or for other kitchen purposes. The board is supported in position by brackets c, which are hinged to strips c', attached to the board A. The brackets c are thus made capable of being moved dat against the said board A when not in use,

The object of placing the strips a around the board A is to form a recess into which the board or boards and brackets may rest when the board or table is in its depressed or folded, down position, as shown in Fig. 3.

`When in use, the wide end of the ironingboard may serve as a table for meals, or to receive dat-irons, te.

Fig. 4 shows a modification of my invention, in which the board B is not used with the smaller board C, but is hinged so as to project a certain distance from the wall to allow the garment to be slipped over the board. This modification will effect many of the advantages resulting from my invention, but is not as convenient as that form shown in the other iigures.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1. As an improvement in ironing-boards, a board hinged to a suitable support and having a portion of its area removed, combined with ahinged board of a shape equal to the removed portion, and hinged supporting-brackets, substantially as set forth.

2. As an improvement in ironing-boards, the hinged boards B O, hinged supportingbrackets c, strips a and c, and board A, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
