Application filed October 3 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAROELLUS M. HITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Luray, in the county of Page and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe and Pants Dusters, of which the following is a speci. fication.

My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for cleaning or dusting shoes and the lower portions of the trousers.

An important object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above mentioned character, by the employment of which the shoes and lower portions of the trousers may be conveniently and quickly cleaned.

A further object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means for securely holding the brush or brushes in the proper positions, against displacement.

A further object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a flat base, upon which are rigidly secured upstanding inverted approximately U-shaped supporting frames 11, provided at their lower ends with horizontal lateral extensions 12, the free ends of which are bent downwardly, as shown at 13, and forced into the material of the base 10, as shown. The horizontal extensions 12 are further secured to the base 10 by staples 14 or the like.

frames, as a whole, the same being formed of relatively wide strips of sheet metal 15, provided at points spaced substantial distances from the ends thereof with openings 16 and adjacent their ends with openings 17 and longitudinally extending slits 17, lead ing therein. Each strip 15 is arranged upon the supporting frame 11 by passing the frame 11 through the openings 16, sub sequently to which the end portions of the strip are bent at right angles adjacent the openings 16, forming transverse portions 18. The slitted ends 19 carried by the transverse portions 18 are preferably subsequently bent at right angles thereto, whereby the sides of the frame 11 enter the openings 17, the slit portions of the extensions 19 being then bent inwardly to over-lap, whereby the portions of the frame 11 are locked in the openings 17 as shown in Fig. 4. In this manner each brush carrying frame 15 is securely attached to the supporting frame 11.

Arranged below the brush carrying frames 15 are supplemental brush carrying frames 20, formed of relatively wide strips of sheet metal, apertured near their ends, as shown at 21, for receiving portions of the supporting frame 11. The ends of the frames 20 are bent providing downwardly extending portions 22, which engage the base 10.

The numeral 23 designates oppositely arranged inwardly extending cleaning brushes, which may be formed of any suitable fibrous material, such as bristles, hemp, jute, rope fiber or the like. Each of the brushes 23 has its strands secured upon the horizontal portion of the brush carrying frame 15, by being bent upon themselves thereon, and securely stitched inwardly of and adjacent the frame 15, as shown at 24c. The frame strips 15 are comparatively wide, for which reason they are adapted to hold the brushes 23 in the proper horizontal position, against permanent accidental displacement, but are sufficiently resilient whereby they can perceptibly turn, upon their longitudinal axls, thus allowing the brushes to partake of limited vertical movements, upon insertion and removal of the feet. Supplemental brushes 25 are secured upon the frames 20 in a similar manner to the brushes 23 and extend outwardly to be arranged upon the outer portions of the base 10, extending beyond the frames 11, as shown.

In the use of the apparatus, the operator 7 places one foot upon either of the brushes 25 thus holding the apparatus stationary, while the other foot is swung or moved between the brushes 23, whereby the shoes and lower portions of the trousers are thoroughly cleaned. The function of the brushes 25 is to provide means to clean the soles of the shoes.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted towithout departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is Apparatus for cleaning shoes and the lower portions of the trousers; comprising a base; oppositely arranged spaced upstanding supporting frames connected with the base; brush carrying frames attached to the supporting frame, each of which comprises a relatively wide strip of sheet metal apertured at points spaced substantial distances from the ends thereof to receive portions of the supporting frame, bent at substantially a right angle adjacent the apertures, and carrying laterally extending slitted end portions receiving portions of the supporting frame; and brushes having the strands thereof bent upon themselves about the horizontal portions of the brush carrying frames and secured thereto.
