GAS-BURNER CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 24, 1912. Serial No. 679,746.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVILLIAM A. FREE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burner Cleaners, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in gas burner cleaners, and it is an object of my. invention to provide a convenient tool which may be readily carried in a persons pocket, and which is capable of removing obstructions from a gas burner so as to quickly and efiiciently clean the same.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a sliding non-detachable cover construction for the gas burner cleaning wires that will effectually prevent their injury or disarrangement when not in use and by means of which the wires may be quickly exposed when it is desired to use the same.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cleaner. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partially in section of my improved cleaner. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through the central portion of the implement, showing one of the cleaning wires sprung outwardly for use.
The details and features of the invention will now be more particularly described, reference being had to the said drawing in which- 5 indicates the body portion of the tool,
6 a reduced shank portion extending from one end thereof and 7 a flattened Wide portion provided with a wrench socket 8 and formed at the opposite end of the body portion 5 from the stem 6. The flattened central portion of the tool is formed with an elongated recess 9 which extends through the body portion 5 of the said tool from side to side. Within this recess a number of cleaning wires 10 are grouped and secured at one end of the said recess 9, by means of solder 11 or other holding material. The wires are sufliciently small to enter the apertures in a gas burner and particularly in the burners employed upon gas lamps commonly employed upon automobiles. The said wires normally are arranged within the recess 9 and are only sprung out for use when a burner becomes clogged. If any of the wires become useless they are readily broken oif and other wires employed for the next cleaning of the burner. The wires are easily pushed out since the recess 9 is open upon both sides and the finger can be inserted for pushing the free ends of the wires outwardly. The wires are normally kept in said recess by means of a sliding casing 12, which fits upon the body portion 5 and is made of suilicient length to entirely cover the elongated recess 9. The said sliding casing 12 is provided with a projection 13 at one end having a stud or detent lt pressed inwardly from the free end thereof, so as to be capable of springing into a recess 15 formed upon the body 5 of the tool. This detent prevents the casing from sliding out of position except when it is desired to use the wires. Then the wires are to be used the casing is slipped to one side of the recess 9 and the inwardly projecting detent 1 L will engage the wrench socket 8 and thus prevent the casing from slipping back to its former position.
that I claim is:
1. A gas burner cleaner, comprising a slot-ted body provided with enlarged portions at its end forming limiting stops, one of said portions forming a handle together with a detent depression, a plurality of cleaning wires secured at one of their ends in one end of said slot, a sliding cover embracing the constricted portion intermediate of said body provided with the slot and adapted to expose or cover said recess, and a detent on said cover to engage the depression to lock said cover.
2. A gas burner cleaner, comprising a body provided with a slot and a handle, a plurality of cleaning wires inclosed in said slot, the wires being secured at one of their ends to one of the walls of said slot, the other ends of the wires being unattached, a sliding sleeve mounted on said handle, said sleeve being noi'i-detachable from said body, and means to limit the movement of the sleeve in either direction, said sleeve when moved forwardly over the slot in the body protecting the wires mounted thereon.
