COMBINED COMB AND CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 16, 1914.
Application filed September 24, 1913. 1 Serial No. 791,536.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN M. Monm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ben Lomond, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Combs and Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to novel and simple means for cleaning the teeth of a comb, and has particular reference to means of this character whereby a tooth cleaning element may be connected with the comb in a manner so that it does not interfere with the ordinary use of the comb and may be readily removed from the comb when it is desired to clean the teeth of the same.
An important object of this invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means for cleaning the teeth of a comb, which are convenient in use, and will not interfere with the ordinary use of the comb or materially affect the appearance or construction thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide means of the above mentioned character, which are simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a comb provided with teeth cleaning means, embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig, 4 is a similar view taken on line of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional View taken on line 55 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the cleaning element.
In the drawings, wherein for the sake of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a comb which may be formed of any suitable material. This comb comprises a longitudinal body portion 11, carrying the usual spaced teeth 12 depending therefrom, as shown.
Formed upon the central portion of the body portion 11 is a longitudinally extending enlargement or housing 13, through which is formed a longitudinal opening 14, which is curved longitudinally, as clearly shown in Fi g. The longitudinally curved opening 14 is open at both ends and closed at the top for the greater portion of its length, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. At the opposite open ends of the opening 14 are slots 15 which lead into the opening 14. The opposite slotted ends of the opening 14 are identical.
. The numeral 16 designates a cleaning element, which is preferably formed of some material which is suitably flexible and resilient. The cleaning element or strip 16 is provided at one end with an upwardly extending lug 17, adapted when the element 16 is passed into the opening 14, to extend upwardly through the slot15, above the housing 13, whereby the same may be engaged by the thumb nail or the like in re moving the element 16. As the slotted ends 15 of the opening 14 are identical, the cleaning element or strip 16 may be inserted into the opening 14 through either end thereof. The function of longitudinally curving the opening 14, is to cause the normally straight suitably resilient cleaning element or strip 16 to be bent longitudinally slightly whereby the same will have sufficient frictional engagement with the walls of the opening 14, to prevent the accidental longitudinal movement of the cleaning element or strip.
I wish it understood that the invention is in no sense restricted to the exact location and arrangement of the longitudinal opening 14 nor is the invention solely restricted to the specific means for detachably connecting the cleaning element 16 to the comb.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with a comb provided centrally of the body portion thereof with a longitudinally extending housing having a longitudinally extending opening formed therethrough provided with identical open slotted ends, and a suitably stiff tooth cleaning element adapted to be inserted into either of the slotted ends of the longitudinal substantially completely concealed thereby.
3. The combination with the teeth carrying body portion of a comb provided upon its longitudinal edge with an outwardly extending tubular housing extending longitudinally of the body portion and provided at one end with an outwardly extending slot in free communication with the interior of the tubular housing of a cleaning element adapted to be readily passed between the teeth of the comb and to be inserted within the tubular housing and provided at one end with an outwardly extending lug to pass into the slot and extend outwardly of the same for providing a catch element to permit of a ready removal of the cleaning element from the tubular housing.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
