1 r1 E MORRIS TED sTATEs PATENT THOMAS G. BAMFIELID AND GEORGE RECHTER, OF ANGEL ISLAND, CALIFORNIA.
COME-CLEANER.
Speoicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1915.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS C. BAM- ELELD, a subject of the King o f. Great Britain, and GEORGE RECHTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Angel Island, in the county of Marin and State of Cahfornia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Comb-Cleaners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to comb cleaners, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a cleaner of simple construction adapted to fit over the back of the comb and which can be quickly moved to strip all of the foreign matter which accumulates between the teeth of the comb ofil the teeth or near the ends thereof so it can be readily wiped oif, said cleaner adapted to be moved back into its initial position and held in place upon the back of the comb whenever desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a comb cleaner of simple construction having a perforated member through which the teeth of the combv projects and means for holding the comb cleaner connected to the back of the comb and permit the cleaner to be moved lengthwise of the teeth to clean the same whenever required.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of a comb having a cleaner connected thereto and made 1 n accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 1s a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing a modified form of comb back, and Fig. 5 is a detail fragmentary perspective view of one end of the comb and cleaner; showing a modified form of means for holding the comb in the cleaner. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the back of a comb which may be of the usual or any suitable construction, said comb back being preferably inclined upon its opposite side and having a plane outer edge as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The teeth 2 may be of the coarse variety and 3 designates the ner teeth. It
will be understood, however, that any form of teeth may be cleaned by the cleaner made to conform to the comb upon which it is designed to be placed. The larger end teeth 4 of the comb are each provided with a longitudinal slot 5 for the purpose which will presently appear.
The cleaner comprises the side members 6 provided with a central slot or channel 7 extending from end to end of the cleaner, and said channel tapering toward the base or bottom thereof. At the bottom of the channel the cleaner is provided with a series of openings or perforations 8 which conform to the cross sectional contour of the teeth 2 or 3 which are to be cleaned. The cleaner is held in position on the back of the comb by means of clips 9 pivoted upon a pin 10 which extends through the side member 6 of the cleaner and through the slot 5 in the end teeth 4. The clips 9 may be provided with extended portions l1, and said clips may be swung upon the pivotal pin 10 over the rounded corners 12 when it is desired to move the cleaner lengthwise of the teeth and to strip the foreign matter, hair and dandrufl' between the teeth.
To facilitate the movement of the comb relatively to the cleaner, the side members 6 may be cut away centrally on a curved line as shown at 13, and the comb back may be provided with a thumb-nail groove so that it can be readily moved out of the cleaner. To facilitate this operation, the comb back 1a as shown in Fig.'4 may be provided with a roughened projection 2a which may extend through the opening 13 in the side member of the cleaner.
As shown in Figs. 5 and 6,the cleaner 3a, is substantially identical with that shown in Fig. 1, but the clip 9 is dispensed with, and a small flat bolt 4a is mounted i`n a recess in the back of the comb 6, said bolt having a pointed end, 5a, adapted when projected to engage notch 7 a in the cleaner. The bolt 4a is provided with a knob 8a and a shank which extends through a slot 9a in the comb back. When it is desired to clean the comb, the bolt 4a is moved back to the position shown in Fig. 6. It is to be understood that there will be a similar device at each end of the comb.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a comb cleaner made in accordance with this invention will always keep a comb in cleanly and sanitary condition, will not interfere with the use of the cornlo, can be quickly Operated for its purpnse, While. the expense of a comb and cleaner inade in accordance with this invention is but slight when compared to the value of a clean and sanitary toilet cornb.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as deii'nedl inv the claim.
What is` claimed is:-
A comb cleaner provided with a longitudinal channel in the upper portion thereof, said cleaner having a series of perforations at the bottom of said channel, through which the teeth of a combv project, the comb having enlarged end' teeth and said teeth Copies Off thispatent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
each provided with a slot extending to near the .end thereof, clips pivoted tothe opposite ends ofV the cleaner, pins extending through the clips and cleaner, and through the slots in the end teeth, said clips adapted to. be moved on the pins to hold the cleaner up to the back of the comb and to be thrown down for permitting the sliding of the cleaner down to near the ends of the teeth of the comb.
In testimony whereof We aiiix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
