Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
Application filed September 30, 1908. Serial No. 455,392.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL O. WHnrsroNn. a citizen of the United States, residing at Basin, in the county of Jefferson, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has reference to improvements in self-cleaning curry-combs, and it aims, primarily, to produce an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, and efficient implement provided with a spirally-formed handle disposed directly over the back plate and so constructed as to conform to the curves of the palm of the hand, thus enabling it to be readily and easily operated.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
Of the said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 8 is an end view. Fig. 1 is a cross section on the line -14 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cleaner plate.
Referrin more particularly to the drawings, 5 designates the top plate or the comb, and 6 a series of longitudinal bars secured to the under face thereof, said bars being channel-shaped and having the lower edges of their arms serrated. These bars are arranged in spaced parallel relation to each other and to the depending side flanges 7 of the plate 5, the flanges being formed by bending downwardly the side edges of the plate. The height of the arms of the bars is the same as that of the flanges, the lower edges of which latter are likewise serrated, as shown. There is likewise disposed beneath the back 5, a cleaner plate 9 which fits between the flanges 7 and is formed with slots 10 through which the arms of the tooth bars extend. Upon this plate is rigidly mounted a stem 11 which projects upwardly back of through a perforation formed in the back 5, said stem terminating in a head 12 between which latter and the back is coiled a spring 13 arranged to normally hold the cleaner plate in inoperative position adjacent the under side of the back.
The handle of the comb comprises a metal strap 14, which is secured at one end to the upper face of the back and curves upwardly therefrom, so as to form an arch 15. This arch is widened at both sides at its upper end, the widened portions forming two lateral arms, the inner portions 16 of which are curved outwardly and downwardly, being riveted to the back 5 at their meeting points therewith. The outer portions 17 of the arms are then bent upwardly and finally curved laterally outward as indicated by the numeral 18, such curved por tions forming finger pieces which are arranged to be engaged by the thumb and little finger of the hand of the operator.
The arch 15, as well as the inner portions 16 of the arch arms, are designed to fit the curve or arch of the palm of the hand, providing a firm, comfortable, and convenient hold for the latter, when the implement is in use, the extension of said arch 15 over the stem 11 preventing the latter from rubbing against and scratching the hand.
hen the comb is to be cleaned, it is only necessary for the operator to move his arm sharply downward, terminating such movement suddenly, whereupon the cleaner plate will be forced outward against the tension of the spring 13, scraping off the accumulated hair and dirt from the arms of the tooth bars, and returning to its normal position at the expiration of such operation.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a curry-comb including a back, of a handle comprising a single piece of material having a transverse arched front portion extending across the back and secured thereto at the terminations of its arch, said main portion being extended laterally on each side beyond said back in the form of vertically inverted hooks to form finger pieces, and a converging longitudinal portion projecting rearwardly from whereby said comb can be pushed with great said main front portion and having its rear force without being tightly gripped. 10 end curved downwardly and secured to said In testimony whereof, I affix my signabaek centrally and adjacent its rear edge, ture in presence of two witnesses.
the downwardly curved rear end of said CARL C. lVI-IETSTONE. rearwardly projecting longitudinal portion lVitnesses: forming a power-applying surface for the J.V.INIG1-IT7 extreme rear of the palm of the hand, GUST HANBERRY.
