To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NEWTON I-I. BURNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rossburg, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycomb Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to curry combs, having special reference to an attachment for the same.

An object of this invention is to provide a curry comb with an attachment whereby the same may be easily and quickly cleaned during the operation of the same.

A further object is to provide a means whereby the teeth of the curry comb will be protected when not in use.

The invention has for a still further object the provision of a curry comb of this nature which is simple in construction and which may be easily operated.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device having the attachment applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view, Fig. 4 is a front end elevation of the same.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, designates a back plate of rectangular formation, which is provided upon its under side with a plurality of depending curry plates 11 which are provided with pluralities of teeth 12 along their lower edges. The plate 10 is provided at its rear edge with a handle 13 stamped from sheet material, which extends backwardly and upwardly, its outer portion being transversely enlarged, and having its opposite side portions bent downward in parallel relation. The diagonal portion 14 of the handle 13 is centrally and longitudinally slotted as at 15 to admit slidably the reduced portion 16 of the operating member 18 which is pivoted at its outer end upon a pin engaged through the opposite sides of the handle 13 at its outer extremity. At its lower end, the handle is provided with a broad fiat portion secured upon the plate 10 in a suitable manner. A leaf spring 17 which is carried upon the inner side of the handle 13 extends downwardly and inwardly and is disposed slidably upon the upper face of the member 18. The spring 17 is thus safely held Within the handle against interference, and is arranged to bear in the most effective manner upon the member 18. The spring serves to hold the portion 16 normally at the lower end of the slot 15 when the members 13 and 18 are released from pressure by the operator. The outer portion of the reduced por tion 16 extends in parallel relation with the back of the comb and is provided with longitudinally spaced transverse openings in which there are engaged lengths of wire forming bails 19 and 20 which extend laterally toward the opposite ends of the plate 10 in parallel relation with the plates 11. The bails l9 and 20 may be increased in number to strengthen the device if necessary. To the lower extremities of the bails- 19 and 20, a guard or cleaner plate 21 is mounted which is adapted to engage over the plates 11 to frictionally slide thereon. The guard 21 comprises a metallic plate preferably of rectangular formation, having a plurality of parallel slits, and is provided with a plurality of circular apertures formed therein at the opposite ends of said slits. The projecting edge portions thus formed adjacent the slits are bent downwardly to form a plurality of slots 22 through which the plates 11 are adapted to pass, the downwardly turned portions forming resilient scrapers bearing against the plates 11. The openings at the ends of the slots serve to facilitate the bending of the intermediate edge portions in the manufacture of the device.

In operation, the handles 13 and 18 are compressed, by which action the guard 21 is caused to slide upwardly upon the plates 11 and to expose the teeth 12. hen it is desired to clean the teeth all that is necessary is to relieve the member 18 of pressure, and by action of the spring 17 the plate will be forced downward upon the plates 11, the downwardly turned portions of the guard plate thus performing a scraping action on the sides of the plates 11, for the removal of any accumulation of matter adhering thereto.

lVhat is claimed is:

1. A curry comb of the class described comprising a back plate, a handle formed of sheet material having a broadened end portion secured upon the plate, said handle having an intermediate portion extending upwardly from the broadened portion at the edge of the plate, said intermediate portion being provided with a longitudinally extending slot, said handle having an enlarged handle portion extending approximately parallel to the plane of the plate, said handle portion having its opposite sides curved downwardly in spaced relation, a band spring secured to the under side of the handle, and extending divergently inward, a pivot pin coengaged through the opposite sides or the handle adjacent its end portion, an operating member pivoted upon the pin and disposed slidably in the slot, said operating member carrying longitudinally spaced bails having downwardly turned portions, said plate having perforations therethrough receiving the downwardly turned portions of the bails slidably therethrough, said spring engaging against the operating member to hold it yieldably at the lower limit of its movement, a plurality of parallel curry plates carried by the first named plate, a guard plate carried by the clownwardly turned extremities of the bail, said plate having a plurality of spaced slits therein having perforations at their opposite ends, the projecting edge portions of the slits between the perforations being turned downwardly and forming scrapers bearing against the opposite sides of the curry plates, said guard member lying normally at the outer limit of its movement with the scrapers in protective engagement with the curry members.

2. In a curry comb of the class described, the combination with a body portion carrying a handle comprising an intermediate portion extending diagonally from one side of the body portion, and thence approximately in a direction parallel with the plane of the body portion, said intermediate portion having a longitudinally extending slot therein, the outer portion of the handle hav ing its sides bent downwardly, and having a pivot pin engaged therebetween adjacent its outer extremity, an operating member pivoted upon the pin and extending slidably through the slot, a band spring secured to the under side of the handle and bearing against the operating member to hold it at the lower limit of its movement, curry members carried by the body portion, and scraper members carried by the operating member in engagement with the curry members, said scraper members lying normally adjacent the extremities of the curry members to form guards and being movable inwardly thereof to allow use of the curry members upon compression of the operating member against the action of said spring.
