To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package Ties and Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to package ties, and more particularly to an implement for receiving and holding the binding cord of a package and also providing means whereby the package may be conveniently carried, a portion of the implement being designed to constitute a handle.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the means for receiving the binding cord imparts both a gripping and a resilient action to the cord whereby the cord is doubly assured against slipping and loosenmg.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds,the invention resides in the novel 'ormation, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a package showing my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary edge elevation of one end of the device; and
Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the manner of attaching the binding cord to the device, the gripping portions of the latter being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my device,
the handle 1 is constructed from a strip of sheet metal rolled to provide a substantially cylindrical hand grip 2. From each end of the hand, the strip of material is flared outwardly and is bent downwardly to provide supporting arms 3. From the terminal of each supporting arm, the strip is bent to lie in a horizontal plane thus providing supporting flanges i normally in contact with the surface of the package.
At the outer extremity of each flange 4, the strip is bent to provide a cylindrical sleeve 5, and when the cylindrical sleeve is thus completed, the remaining end portion 6 of this strip is disposed in contact with Specification of Letters Patent.

the upper surface of the corresponding flange 4.. As shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing, the endof the strip of metal is tapered from the point at which the sleeve 5 is completed, thus forming a relatively narrow terminal which may be rolled upon itself for forming a finger grip 7.
Adjacent each end of the sleeve 5 is a slit extending half way through the sleeve and the portion of the metal that extends from each slit to the end of the sleeve is pressed inwardly as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing and contacts with the inner wall of the corresponding end portion of the sleeve. Two semicircular locking clips 8 are thereby provided in each sleeve 5, and, by virtue of their arcuate curve they provide a re siliency exerted against the rear wall of the sleeve for locking the end of the binding eprd" when the same is embraced by either c ip.
Each flange & and the portion 6 which overlies the flange, is longitudinally corrugated as shown in detail in Fig. 3. The corrugations in the flange 4 at each end of the device register with the corrugations in the portions 6 thereby providing a lock for the portions of the binding cord which are extended between these two members 4 and 6. The sleeve 5 forms a spring whereby the portion 6 is resiliently held in engagement with the flange 4. In order to insert the binding cord between the members t and 6, it is necessary to grasp the finger grip 7 and raise the portion 6 against the resilient action of the sleeve 5. The cord may be then placed between the corrugations and when the portion 6 is permitted to spring back into normal position, the cord will be snugly held against accidental displacement.
Referring to Fig. 4 ,of the drawing, wherein I have illustrated the method of attaching the cord to the device, it will be observed that one end A of the cord passes around one of the sleeves 5 and under the portion 6. From this the cord continues through the corrugated portion as indicated at B and is then extended transversely around the package and again through the corrugated gripping elements d and 6 as indicated at C in Fig. 4 of the drawing: then, emerging from the gripping element, the cord is passed longitudinally around the package and has a portion extending between the gripping elements t and 6 at the opposite end of the device as indicated at D.
The cord is then transversely extended around the package and again through the corrugated gripping element as shown at E. The clip 8 at this end of the device then receives the cord, the same passing through the cylindrical portion where it is extended to the opposite end of the device and passed through a cylindrical portion 5 at this end and is clipped by the clip 8 so that the free end F is held against displacement.
'Whi1e the present disclosure is that of What I believe to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and proportion of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention, as defined in the appended claims,

2. A package tie comprising a handle, flanges formed at the terminals of the handle, the ends of each flange being provided with a cylindrical sleeve, and resilient gripping means associated with each sleeve and adapted to coeperate with each flange for exerting a gripping action on each flange.
3. A package tie comprising a handle, the ends of the said handle being flared outwardlyand bent to provide supporting arms, flanges formed at the terminals of the supporting arms, the said flanges being longitudinally corrugated, a cylinder formed at the free-end of each flange, the cylinder having its end portions pressed inwardly to provide clips, and gripping means associated with'the said flanges, the saidmeans also including corrugations in regist' 'ation with the corrugations of the flanges.

A package tie comprising a hand grip having supporting arms formed at each end, flanges integrally formed with the ends of the supporting arms, the said flanges being longitudinally corrugated, sleeves formed by the rounded ends of said flanges, gripping means resiliently carried by the sleeves and engaging with the said corrugated surfaces of the flanges, clips carried by each of the sleeves, and the Said clips being formed by inwardly pressed end portions of each sleeve.
6. A package tie comprising a handle, flanges formed at the terminals of the handle and provided with longitudinal corrugations, cylindrical sleeves integrally formed with the flanges, the said sleeves at each end carrying a gripping element associated with the corrugations of each flange, and a finger grip carried by the said gripping means.
7. In a package tie, the combination with a package and a binding cord therefor, of a pair of cylindrical sleeves, means connecting the'sleevcs, said means including a pair of corrugated flanges, and a gripping element resiliently connected to each sleeve and adapted to beheld in engagement with each flange for retaining portions of the said cord in said corrugations.
8. In a'package tie, the combination with a package and a binding cord therefor, of a handle,flangesintegrally connected with the ends of the handle, sleeves formed at the ends of the flanges and carrying gripping means'co-acting With the said flanges and in engagement with a portion of said cord, the said sleeves provided with slits adjacent each end, and clips formed by inwardly bent end portions of the sleeves beyond the said slits.
