APPLICATION FILED 050.10, 1921.

I ATTORNEY WITNESS:
BOTTLE CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented An 55,
Application filed. December 10, 1921. .Serial No. 521,467.
To all 40 From it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Answer M. nnrrr, a citizen of the United States. residing at Clevelano. in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in'Bottle Carriers. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle carriers and has for its object the provision of a novel device adapted to be engaged upon the n ck of a milk or other bottle whereby to carry the same without dangerct its slipping from the fingers.
An important and more specific object is a device of this character which is former entirely of wire bent to the proper shape and having sutlicient resilience whereby it may be engaged upon the necks of bottles of varying diameters.
Another object is the provision of a device t this character which is provided with novel catch means whereby the device may be securely clamped upon a bottle. this catch means being furthermore of such. construction that it may be very quickly and easily released when it is desired to remove the device from the bottle An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture. easy to apply and use. highly etlicient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view. the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which the figure shows a perspective view of my device in applied position upon a milk bottle.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, I have shown my device as comprising a collar adapted to be engaged upon the neck of a milk bottle, this collar being formed as an open loop and having one end extended laterally as indicated at 11 and terminating in an eye 12' The other end of this collar is extended laterally as indicated at 13 and terminates in a bent portion 1% which constitutes a finger grip. At diametrically opposite points the collar 10 is formed with outwardly extending bent portions 15 upon which are pivotally engaged eyes 16 formed on the ends of the 17 of an inverted U-shaped handle member 18.
If preferred the bent portion of this handle member 18 may be provided with a suitable wooden handle as indicated at 19.
In order to effect clamping of the collar 10 upon the. neck portion of a milk bottle. I provide a catch device which is formed from a'single length of wire and which is formed at one end with an eye 20 pivotally connected with the eye 12. Interm diate its ends this catch device is bent as indicated at 21 to provide a retaining angle which has its edge toward the lateral end 13 termed with notches 23 for the purpose of preventslipping when the catch device is in clamping position. It is preferable t at the outer edge of the lateral portion 13 be partly filed away so as to be somewhat V-shaped in cross section as indicated at Zato provide an edge which will catch into the notches The intermediate portion 01* this clampdevice is inclined as indicated at while the terminal portion is 7 an eye 26 which constitutes a finger grip.
In the use of the device, when it is desired to engage it upon the neck of a milk bottle, the clamping device is entirely disengaged -iom the lateral end 13 ot the collar so that the lateral ends 11 and 13 may be spread apart when the device is slipped onto the milk bottle neck. After the collar 10 is placed upon the neck, the clamping device is so swung that the inclined portion thereof will engage over the lateral end 13 of the collar. alter which the clamping device ispressed down so that the inclined portion riding over the lateral end 13 of the collar will draw this end 13 toward the end 11. which will result in causing the collar to clampingly engage the neck. When the clamping device or catch been thus pressed down the l-shaped portion 24- ot the lateral end 13 will engage within one or" the notches 23 and hold the parts against casual displacement. After the device has been applied as above described it is readily apparent that the operator may grasp the U- shaped handle member 18 and carry the milk bottle with perfect safety and without any danger of dropping the same on account of slipping from the lingers.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that l have thus provided an extremely simple and consequently inexpensive device which is well adapted tor use in carrying milk bottles or in fact any other similar hottles or receptacles having necks, the device being very easy to apply andremove and being incapable of becoming accidentally disengaged and resulting in loss or breakage of the bottle.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, con struction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention I claim:
1. A bottle carrier comprising a collar adapted to be engaged upon the neck of a receptacle, said collar being formed of resilient material and having its ends terminating in lateral extensions, and a clamping device permanently pivotally connected with one of said extensions and engageable over the other whereby to clamp the collar upon the receptacle, said clamping device comprising a body having its intermediate portion formed inclined whereby to constitute a cam engaging one of said lateral ends of the collar with its terminal portion formed with a finger engaging loop.
2. A bottle carrier comprising a collar adapted to be engaged upon the neck of a receptacle, said collar being formed of resilient material and having its ends terminating in lateral extensions, and a clamping device permanently pivotally connected with one of said extensions and engageable over the other whereby to clamp the collar upon the receptacle, said clamping device comprising a body having itsintermediate portion formed inclined whereby to constitute a cam engaging one of said lateral ends of the collar with its terminal portion formed with a finger engaging loop, said clamping member being formed with a series of notches and the lateral extension engageable thereby being 'V-shaped in cross section whereby to define an edge engageable within a selected one of said notches.
8. A device of the character described comprising an expansible collar of resilient material adapted for engagement upon the neck of a receptacle, said collar being formed at its ends with lateral extensions one ofwhich terminates in a finger grip and the other of which terminates in an eye, a clamping memberhavingone end provided with an eye pivotally connected with said first named eye and formed intermediate its ends with a retaining portion formed with notches adapted to engage over thefirst named lateral extension and being formed intermediate its ends with an inclined portion adapted to exert a cam action for clamping the collar upon the receptacle, and an inverted U-shaped handle pivotally connected with said clamping member at opposite sides thereof.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
