THOMAS BURBERRY, OF LONDON AND COUNTY OF HANTS, ENGLAND.
LEGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1913.
Application filed October 5, 1912. Serial No. 724,168.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B'onnnnny, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at London and Hampshire, England, have invented certain new and useful In1- provements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
The obj eet of this invention is to construct a legging in an improved manner so that it shall fit the leg of the wearer comfortably and while only fastening at the top the bottom portion shall be held in position so that it will not bulge or become unsightly or open out to interfere with the movements of the wearer.
This invention will be clearly understood from the following description aided by the annexed drawing in which Figure 1 shows the legging from the outside in flat condition. Fig. 2 is an elevation partly folded of the inside of the legging. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the legging completely wrapped. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 5 is a plan.
In carrying out this invention the legging is constructed from one or more pieces of material A which, when flat as shown at Fig. 1, has a somewhat straight top edge B with the side edges C gradually curving inwardly in toward the bottom, leaving the bottom edge D of a somewhat straight or slightly curved character but of approximately only one third the length of the top edge B. The center portion E of the material may be shaped to approximate the contour for the calf of the leg.
At the top of the legging, on one side of its center, is positioned a lever or other fastening device F and at or near the extreme end of the top on the same side a similar device G. ()n the other side of the center is positioned at about the same places a series Copies of this patent may be obtained for of eyelets, H, I. Now if the legging be placed upon the leg with the center at the back of the leg, one side is first wrapped around the leg and the fastener G of that side is connected to one of the eyelets H on the other side near the center, as at Fig. 2, then the other side is wrapped around and the fastening device F next the center on the other side is connected to the outer eyelets 1. Thus by wrapping the legging around the leg and securing same at the top edge the side edges C of the legging are brought in over the ankle and the leg portion and by being curved they are kept close to the leg in the placed position, see Fig. 3, due principally to the double wrapping at the top edge.
The legging may be worn under the trousers-next the legfor additional warmth, or under the band of knickerbockers, there being no projecting or big fastenings to interfere and in which case the rain will run oil outside the legging instead of into the aperture between the knickerboeker and the legging as when using ordinary leggings.
\Vhat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A legging having straight upper and lower edges, sides gradually sloping toward said lower edge, fastening means positioned near the top edge on each side of its center, and other fastening means near the extremities of said top edge adapted for cooperation with said first named fastening means.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing \vit nesses.
