COMBINED LEGGING AND THIGH-COVERING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Application filed March 25, 1911. Serial No. 616,859.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN B. NATHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Leggings and Thigh'Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to leg and thigh coverings and has for one of its objects to produce a combined device of this character which shall be easily detachable so that the legging may be readily converted into the combined leg and thigh covering.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastening arrangement for the component parts of the device such as will allow free play for the knee of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a. fastening arrangement for the component parts as will allow both parts to be made of stiff material or flexible material with stiffening means.
A further object of the invention is to provide stiffening means in the thigh portion of the combination device, such as will not interfere with the movement of the knee of the wearer.
A still further object of the invention is to provide, in a combination device of this character, a construction which will allow the upper part to overlap the exterior of the lower part and thus constitute a water shield.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of this invention, Figure 1 is a side view of a human leg attired in my improved combination covering; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along lines 9.-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along lines 3-3 of Fig. 1; Figs. 4 and 5 are fragmentary views illustrating the construction and arrangement of the fastening means.
1 indicates an ordinary form of legging and 2 indicates a thigh covering removably fastened to the legging and forming an extension thereof.
2 and 21 indicate various positions which may be assumed by part 2.
'The legging illustrated herein has the stiffening spring 1EL embedded in the material and is provided adjacent the edges of its upper end with the slot and hook fastening 3 and at its lower end with the slot and button fastening L1. When the legging is to be put on, the lower portion thereof is manipulated so as to bring slot 5 in registry with button (3, and slot 7 in regist'ry with hook 8, whereupon the latter is turned so as to lock the edges together. The usual strap 9 is provided to pass under the instep of the foot and is :fastened by the buckle 10. This form of legging old and well known and I make no claim thereto per se. I desire it to be understood, moreover, that any other form of legging may be used in connection with my improved construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.
On opposite sides of the upper part of the legging and at an axis extending substantially parallel or coincident with the axis of the knee joint of the wearer are riveted the ball members 11 and 12, and on corresponding sides of the lower part of the thigh covering are riveted the socket members 13 and 141. These ball and socket members constitute the parts of the ball and socket fastenings indicated generally as 15 and 16. In the flap of the thigh covering opposite the flap which bears socket member 14, is formed an eyelet 17 adapted to pass over ball member 12 this holding said former flap in place when the fastening is closed.
18 indicates an ordinary form of buckle which constitutes means for fastening the thigh covering to the leg of the wearer. Three of these buckles are shown but I desire it to be understood that a less or greater number may be used or some other form of fastening may be adopted without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The material of which this combination leg and thigh covering is made may be either stiil' or flexible. The use of the stiff material is made possible by reason of the location of the fastenings 15 and 16 on an axis parallel with the axis of the joint of the knee of the wearer. The two parts of the covering can thus have a pivotal movement with reference to each other and accommodate themselves to the natural movements of the knee of the wearer. When flexible material is used, a stitl'cning spring 19 is preferably embedded in the material at the lateral overlapping edge of the thigh section. This spring extends only part way down the edge so as to leave a flexible portion to allow for a greater movement of the knee than is permitted by the pivoted connection obtained through fasteners 15 and 1G.
It will be seen that by my construction the legging may be worn by itself or with the extension member fastened to it, so as to constitute a covering either for the leg alone, or for the leg, knee and thigh.
It is also plain that by reason of the overlapping of the thigh portion over the leg portion, a water shield is formed which will prevent the rain and snow from penetrating the joint between the two members of my device.
It will be noted also that, by reason of the f form and location of the fastening I employ for connecting the two parts, free play is allowed for the knee without causing wrinkling and working down of the material.
By my novel arrangement of the. stiffening means in the thigh portion, also a Hexible material may be used without its Vwrinkling appreciably and still allow for the necessary freedom of movement of the knee of the wearer. i
I claiml. A combined leg and thigh covering comprising a legging and a thigh extension pivoted thereto, the axis of said pivot being substantially parallel with the axis of the knee joint of the wearer, whereby said extension is pivotally movable about the axis of said pivot in a direction corresponding to the direct-ionof movement of the knee.
2. In combination with a legging and a thigh extension removably connected therewith, of two fastening members located at diametrically `opposite sides of the upper edge of the legging and two corresponding mating fastening members located at the lower edge of the thigh extension, said fastenings being located on an axis substantially coincident with the axis of the knee joint of the wearer, and adapted to permit pivotal movement between the parts of the combined device.
3. In combination with a legging and a thigh extension removably connected therewith, of fastening means for connecting the two, said fastening means being located on an axis substantially coincident with the axis of the knee joint of the wearer and adapted to permit relative pivotal movement between the parts of the combined device.
4L. A combined leg and thigh covering comprising a legging and a thigh extension removably connected therewith, fastening means on one of said members, and corresponding fastening means on the other of said members, the mating fastenings being l located closely adjacent to the contiguous edges of said members and located and adapted to permit relative pivotal movement between them in the "direction of movement of the knee of the wearer.
