To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELLENE ALICE BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Rain Boots or Leggins for Ladies or Children, of which the following is a full and true description, enabling others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make the same.

My invention relates to rain boots or leggins such as are worn by ladies or children during wet or rainy Weather. Its object is to provide a safe and healthy protection to the leg and at the same time present a neat and attractive appearance.

It consists in an over gaiter for the shoe and an attached upper portion of a peculiar formation fully shown in the accompanying drawings in which like letters refer to like parts in each view.

Figure 1, is a perspective view of the device on a leg. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the main gore fastener. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the stirrup fastener and inside gore-holding strap.

The device is properly divided into three distinct but attached parts, the back A, the front B, the over gaiters O and selvage-holding strap K.

A Fig. 1 is the back part of the leggin. It is made of waterproof material and has perforations A upon its upper part. This portion of the device is attached to the over gaiter at c, and is so formed that it is as nearly glove fitting as possible, that is, it is made to conform to the shape of the leg without gathers. The object of this close fitting is to obviate a radical objection to the unseemly appearance of a leggin gathered or loose at that part covering the back and calf of the leg.

The front portion of the device B is con- It has perforations B upon its upper portion. A seam g connects it with the back portion A, and this seam g, is a continuation of the opening G. This front portion B may be made of a lighter material than A. It has a fullness or series of gatherings b, b. This fullness in the front and glove fitting of the back portion are very essential parts of this invention. A band preferably elastic B holds the leggin in position on the leg.

The over gaiter O is shaped to fit over the shoe, and has a stirrup D to hold it in position on the foot or shoe. The over gaiter has also an opening G, which extends above it to admit of the foot easilypassing into it. This gore is preferably fastened together by means of the fastener shown in Fig. 2. The ring or eyelet E is fixed into or on one side of the opening and the cone shaped part E upon the other in proper relationship to each other. The core E has a split in its top e, and its greatest diameter is at E The fasteners are made of metal having resiliency so that when the two parts of the cone caused by the split e are forced together they will spring apart when released.

The stirrup D is preferably made of leather or other non-elastic material and is provided with an elastic core or center d; the object of this arrangement being to give a certain amount of elasticity to the stirrup and at the same time prevent wear by having the outside covering of leather or other non elastic material coming in contact with the shoe. The stirrup has also a fastener shown in Fig. 3. The part D is fixed on the end of the stirrup and the part D is attached as shown in Fig. 1 to the lower portion of the over gaiter.

The interior opening holding strap K which is preferably made of elastic material is permanently fastened to one side of the over gaiter by one end and provided with a hook or eye or other suitable means of fastening on the opposite side of the over gaiter.

The operation of using the leggin is as follows: The foot is thrust through the elastic band B and down until the band B is lodged about as shown in Fig. 1, on the leg L; the gatherings b on the front portion admitting of the leggin extending enough to freely admit of the passage of the foot. \Vhen the foot has passed through the over gaiter O, the strap K is taken by one hand and fastened to the hook or eye upon the opposite side, thus holding the gaiter in position, while the opening is drawn together and the part Eof the fastener pressed through the eyelet E of the same, thusenabling the wearer to perform the entire operation of fastening the gaiter with one hand and securing a great advantage, it being very difiiicult for a lady dressed in the prevailing fashion, to reach the ankle with both hands at the same time, The part of the fastener E has a split in it e, which admits of the contraction of the same when forced into the eyelet,and being made of metal having some resiliency. After the cone has passed the point of' its greatest diameter E it springs open and is thus secured in its position in the eyelet. After the opening has thus been closed the stirrup is brought under the foot and secured in position by forcing the cone D of the fastener into the perforated disk D While the means for fastening described above are preferred, other means as for instance lacing or buttoning, may be used.

Having thus described my-invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a rain boot and overgaiter consisting of a glove fitting portion for the back of the leg, a gathered portion for the front of the log, a glove fitting overgaiter for the foot attached to said front and back portion for the leg, said overgaiter provided with an opening adapted to be closed by means of suitable fastenings, in combination with the strap K attached to the inside of the parts of said opening said strap adapted to hold the selvages of the opening in close relationship to each other, as herein shown and described.

2. In a rain boot and overgaiter having a perforated glove fitting top portion for the, back, a perforated gathered portion for the front of the leg,a glove fitting overgaiter attached to said front and back leg portions provided with an opening adapted to be closed by means of suitable fastenings in combination with strap K attached to the inside of the parts of said opening said strap adapted to hold the selvages of said opening in close relationship to each other, and stirrup D adapted to hold said gaiter in position as herein shown and described.
