M. E. CORY.
LEGGING. No. 258,996. I Patented June 6, 1882.
Inventor UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY E. CORY, O F RICHMOND, INDIANA.
LEGGING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,996, dated June 6, 1852.
Application filed April I. 1882. (No model.)
[0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARY E. 00m, a oldzen of the United States, residing at Richmond, Wayne county, Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wcaringapparel, being a legging made as hereinafter described, preferably of light water-proof material, commonly known as gossamer, intended as a protection to the lowerlirnbs against moisture in rainy weather while walking, and designed for the special use of ladies and children.
The form and general structure of my invention are exhibited in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the leggings complete as in use,aud Fig.2 is an elevation showing the legging opened and the internal flap exposed.
The device is made in substantially the general form of the ordinary worsted legging worn bychildremaud as shown atA in the drawings, beingadapted to the contour of the lowerlimbs, and provided with an elastic garter inserted at a, to encircle the leg below the knee and hold the legging in position. At the bottom it is flared, as shown at b, to fit around the foot-instep, and is provided with a strap, 0, passing beneath the shoe at the arch of the instep to hold the lower part in position. It is further provided with a triangular gusset, d, of elastic material, as shown, which permits the logging to fit the shoe closely and adapt itself to the motions of walking. The legging is open at one side a little toward the front, as at c, and provided with a row of buttons or other fastening. which facilitates the removal or replacing of the legging; and, in order to prevent the entrance of moisture through the interstices of this opening, a flap,f, is provided, which, when the edges of the opening are held together,'extends the inner edge farenough to protect the limb. The parts most exposed to wear in use are suitably re-enforced by lining or otherwise.
The legging thus made constitutes adight, portable covering, easily applied and removed, and extremely serviceable as a protection to the lower limbs in wet weather.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved water-proof legging, A, provided with the elastic band a, elastic gusset d, and theinner flap,f, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARY E. CORY.
