To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERIC W. S. vAGn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granville, `in the county of' Iliashington, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knit or Woven Fabric or Felted Boots, of which the following is a specification.

iviy invention relates to knit or woven fabric or felted boots worn in connection with overshoes, and has for its object to provide certain improvements on the construction of the same shown in an application for Letters Patent filed by me August 7, 1905, Serial No. 277,369, in Letters Patent No. 844,992, granted to me February 19, 1907, as the assignee of Adelbert I'I. Anderson, and Letters Patent No. 883,573, granted to me March 31, 1908, and in applications nieu by me March 26, 1908, Serial No. 423,462, and May 5, 1908, Serial To. 431,041, as will be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which z- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boot or sock embodying my improved construction. There is now made and sold upon the market a felt boot or sock known as the Coon Tail boot or sock, made bv the Mishawaka Woolen Manufacturing Company, of Mishawaka, Indiana, wherein there is provided a guard, flap or eXcluder encircling the ankle portion of' the boot or sock and adapted to overlie the top edge of the overshoe when the latter is in place on said boot or sock.

In Figs. 1 to 4, I have shown one form of my improvement, wherein the reference numeral 1 denotes the boot or sock, and 2 the flap or exeluder. In the Coon Tail l boot or sock said flap or excluder is formed integral with the boot or sock, and is split up its front only, while in my construction I may either forni the same integral or separate and permanently attached to said boot or sock, and I also contemplate splitting said flap or excluder at a plurality of points, say at approximately the front 3 and back 4, as shown. To protect said flap against wear, I attach to the outside of the same layers of' waterproofed material 5, 5, preferably duck, the layer on one side of the split or splits being extended beyond the edge or edges of the flap to form a rounded tongue or tongues 6, which, when the flap is brought to position over the over-shoe will overlie and protect the opening or openings formed by said split or splits.

I have illustrated the flap 2 as split at approximately the front and back, as shown in my Letters Patent No. 883,573, hereinbefore referred to, and I locate said tongues 6 so that they will both lie upon the same side of the boot or sock where overlapped. Now with one member of a fastening buckle 7 attached to each of said tongues 6, and` the other members of said buckles attached to the material 5, as shown in Fig. 1, the fastening of said buckles will hold the flap or excluder firmly in place, and will also cover and protect the split points.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated a slightly modified construct-ion, wherein the protecting material 8 is made wider and folded to cover a -portion of said flap 2 on both sides. With this construction the tongues 9, to which one member of the buckles 10 are attached are Jformed by eX- tending the material 8 where it lies upon the outside of the flap 2, as best seen in Fig. 6.

In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown still another modification wherein the flap 2 is split at its front only, as shown at 11, and in this construction the protecting strip 12 is formed in one piece extending completely around the boot or sock 1 and provided with a single projecting tongue 13 adapted to overlap the split portion, said tongue carrying one member of the buckle 14, the other member being attached to the body of the strip 12, as shown.

In Fig. 9 I have shown still another modiication, in which there is employed only a and rear, as shown in A only, in which tab l5 of the protecting material, which will form the tongue or tongues to overlap the split or splits and will also serve as a strengthened material for the attachment of one buckle member.

It will be understood that while I prefer to split they flap or excluder 2 atthe front Figs. l to 6, I contemplate using any of the several improvements hereinbefore described in connection with iiaps or excluders split at the front event the protecting material will be carried in one piece around the back of the boot or sock, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, wherein the protecting' band l2 is a modified form of that shown in Fig. l for use: with a. flap or excluder split only at the fro-nt.

I have found it desirable to hinge both the engaging members of the buckles 7 to their plates 16 to which they are riveted in position, this hinging giving more flexibility to said membersand reducing the strain on Vtheir rivets.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A boot or sock, embodying a slitted depending flap, and a reinforcing strip applied to the exterior surface of said flap and cov- ;ering a surface thereof equal to the length of the slit therein, and extended at the slitted point to form a tongue for overlapping and covering said slit.

2. A boot or sock, embodying a slitted depending iap formed integral therewith, and a reinforcingl strip applied to the exterior surface of said iiap and covering a surface thereof of a width equal to the length of the slit therein, and extended at the slitted point. to form a. tongue for overlapping and closing' said slit.

3. A boot or sock, embodying a slitted depending Hap, and a reinforcing strip applied to said flap, covering a surface thereof of a width equal to the length of the slit therein, extending throughout the circumference thereof, and projected into a tongue for overlapping and covering said slit.

t. A boot or sock, embodying a slitted depending iiap att-ached thereto, and a reinforcing strip folded longitudinally to embrace both the inner and the outer surfaces of said flap and attached thereto, and projected at the slitted point to form a tongue for voverlapping the slit.
